*Didn’t actually get a good read of the World Series, Attaboys! to Jays ,but while few know what ‘s under a Wizard’s hat. Shorkknows had a tough week of NFL football*.

Okay, the question of Loserville being in Charlotte professional sports rear view mirror- NFL, NBA, MSL for starters- was actually rhetorical. ‘Escape velocity’ is still down the line.

QB Dalton (ehhhh) and RB Dowdle (!! Canales!!) are difference makers mas or menos, but seriously, nothing negative about Chuba or Kalkbrenner.

Halloween tricks probably won’t continue into Sunday’s game against Green Bay for Panther fans, and although 13 points might entice bettors, there are plenty of alternatives for this long-time sports bettor. No sense worrying about the home team when the Raiders are only getting 3 pts. from the Jaguars and the Giants (-2.5) are only getting a couple from the 49ers. While the Giants have screwed me religiously my entire betting life- and my 50th high school reunion was only a month ago- I won’t take Panthers game either way. Its more about the Hamiltons than Benjamins at this point, and although I’ll watch and cheer for them, no sense letting a good parlay get torpedoed.

Actually, scratch that ‘tude. Made Ed. Note- Just after kickoff, recognizing I couldn’t be a weenie about Panthers predictions, ‘If Bryce *doesn’t* blow things up and have to play from 14 pts. behind- just saying, we know that’s been a problem. Pass rush HAS to arrive today, taking good O-line making long drives, T-Mc and all others catching vs. dropping, Yes, Panthers beat the spread by scoring average 21.

Denver (-1.5!) in Houston sure feels like a gift, with 36 sacks by defense and Bo Nix picking up where he left off rookie year, which was pretty damn good. Whether it would be a sportscaster jinx for anyone in the TV booth or for a writer to suggest Colts QB Dan Jones (formerly an unappreciated Giant) could be a Comeback Player of the Year candidate- usually the domain of injured players vs. just hated for contract-production of wins negativity- suggesting Indy continue best practices, yeah, BUT… Maybe they open the proverbial can of whupass on the Aaron Rodgers Steelers, after Tomlin’s Monday Night’s performance. Give minimal three points? Done.

I’d also suggest taking the Lions (-8.5) against the Vikings, because Detroit is still working off a couple decades of being thumped by the Vikes and Packers. There’s no reason to believe Mr. Shough (really? the ending sounds like a K?) will have anything except ugly from pretty early against the Rams.

Guess what? Panthers game is only one I backed that pulled its weight. ‘The Other Guys’

In the MLS playoffs, Charlotte’s 4th seeded Crown lost the first game at home 1-0 to #5 seed NYCFC on a 34th minute goal by Alonso Martinez. Charlotte FC forward Wilfried Zaha, who was red-carded in the season finale and missed this game, was a considerable loss offensively. They went to NYC for the second leg of a cumulative score series Saturday, and evened the series with a 1-0 penalty shootout (7-6) win. Charlotte FC Goalkeeper Kristijan Kahlina stopped Agustin Ojeda for the finale. Teams will have an extended time before Game 3 Friday.

The Hornets, who hit a terrific 18-3s and nine players with double figures in their season opener against Brooklyn Nets, were much less prolific in second week of the season, are now 2-3 after being whacked by the Miami Heat 144-117, and Orlando Magic (2-4) last night, 123-107. Kon Kneuppel, who had five of the Hornets triples in opener, had one last night, and five points in 27 minutes, avg. 30 min. court time and shooting 41% from 3. Center Ryan Kalkbrenner continued his solid play with 17 points and 7 rebounds, and definite rim protector. Lorenzo Ball had a 17 point, 13 assist night, and is averaging 26.3 pts., 9.5 asst, 8.3 rebounds, Moussa Diabate had ten points and six rebounds. He and Kalkbrenner could become a tandem.

Loserville might be a state of mind, but in the betting world, you are frequently either the predator or the prey. The Panthers opened the season at +400 regarding winning the NFC South (FanDuel) is currently +700. Go figure…The Hornets (3-5) after losing 116-112 to Pelicans, is playing in the sorry Southeast Division, +2200 to win their division, ahead of the (honestly, still listed as an NBA team?) Washington Wizards at +25000, the Magic at +100.

*This one’s for ump with clutch call on tag at 2nd base in LLWS game, and football operations for Panthers, putting a much-better product on the field in 2025.*

Politics aside on mens #&%!?# souls or lack thereof, after a 6-run rally in seventh inning carried Irmo to victory the night before, the Southeast reps were part of youthful glory everywhere for Little Leaguers, families, and fannies. Panthers now at cut-down time to 53, fans should hope GM Morgan has that A+ touch one more time (for a linebacker?) before Sept. 7th game with Jags in Jacksonville.

September 8th I have some Precinct Judge (D) duties in prep for local elections on 9th. I wonder about current political soul-ry more often lately. Stephen Miller is for sure wrong though, Tibetan circulatory exercises from online actually work, making me an active 68 who doesn’t usually require the nap. CBD drops are hemp… Yeah, Blue & Yellow combo is a protest for Ukraine.

As a sports fan, and considering retiring as an active Blue (umpire), I watched a full share of LLWS, and congrats to those young players, and an overall thrilling run of TV human moments and sportsmanship. The ‘Believe’ their coach laid on them before that near-miraculous comeback, its a touch better than ‘Win one for the Gipper.’ Yay! Coach.

The call at second, where Irmo runner *barely* wanders off, as catcher heaves it down after passed ball that might’ve opened a door for another Southeast rally, and fielder waves a slap-tag at him ‘just because,’ ump was right on it for OUT! Just sayin’.

Proud Blue raises a cold one to you gentlemen, and to your dedicated leadership, those coaches and these moments will be forever memories. Its not hyperbole to say its the American Way I grew up with, everybody can appreciate laying it on the line, somebody wins.

SURPRISES?! For 2025 Roster – room for a couple Others

August 26th is now the operational date for getting down to 53 on main roster, plus 16 on taxi squad. Up close, its a tough call on keeping six or seven receivers on 53-man roster – most had penciled Renfrow as #6. Please don’t trade Thielen back to Vikes! to make room. To be a hero again back there, maybe – guy deserves to be part of a great year, could definitely mentor Horn.

Trevor Ettiene probably won’t be a surprise keeper, a sweet return last night was affirmation he’s the return-special teams talent they’ve wanted. UDFA Thornton as a DB seems like a lock for Panther rotation, his strong final preseason game with Steelers nothing but good news. -GShork 8/22/25

If many aren’t 100% sold on Nick Scott at safety opposite Moehrig, Canales vote will count. Ransom had an INT last night, the prospects of being both strong cover and the traditional Ohio St. run-support football guy will help put DC Ejiro Evero’s reputation back on more righteous track.

Penciling in one more unforeseen linebacker pickup by Morgan to give that group actual depth is reasonable. A major factor in 2024, bodies-personnel were brought in/started in under a week several times during injury-plagued season. The roster has been restocked with players with documented productivity for 2025, Windmon and Rhattigan should see their names on it. Shy Tuttle might well be leaving, or kept as affordable backup.

Is Wallace ready to be All That for Panthers defense in Year 2? GM Morgan showed his quality marksmanship in free agency, before an A+ draft as rated by PFF, using #2 and #3 picks on hard-charging defensive ends. Panthers have been within three of bottom sack position and pressures for years. Anything like that 3,000 given up rushing isn’t going to be allowed. Nose tackle Cam Jackson (6’6″, 328 lbs, Florida) will get plenty of reps.

A Four-Point better Offense – You Better Believe It

GM Dan Morgan has built a healthy level of respect league wide for being a super-cagey front office guy legend, starting early with a major log on the fire, drafting a true WR1 with #8 pick, Tetairoa McMillan while rest of NFL was thinking deee-fense! https://www.si.com/nfl/panthers/news/carolina-panthers-rookie-tetairoa-mcmillan-value-picks Camp video showed T-Mac tracking-catching a perfect over the top, fade to outside shoulder, tight coverage throw, and then everyone saw same deal, with a one-arm catch in first exhibition game. That’s not just reputation or trick mirrors, its WR1 grade play.

Morgan got #2 back Rico Dowdle, a 1,000 yards gainer for Cowboys, FREE! when they neglected to offer him any deal. The option of a second, seriously good back behind the Panthers well-regarded, and 100% back intact, two deep O-line, is an absolute strength in 2025.

Its painful that anyone feels Leggette’s position as first round draft choice last year (Morgan’s initial career biggie deal) is somehow diminished to ‘secondary sidekick’ status if T-Mac becomes All That as a rookie. Second years are frequently the jumping off year for such players, extra coaching counts. NOBODY can find fault with the obvious effort XL has put into becoming a better ‘hands’ receiver, certainly not HC Canales, whose loyalty to efforts for better by all individuals is strong. Yes, there are expectations.

Canales previous relationships with WR Moore might be enough at decision point this time. If Panthers could afford to keep seven receivers, he has got special teams efforts as hole card, like Etienne will in staying as a back. (Ed. Note – Renfrow comes back! after Coker injury, Thielen trade.)

Bryce Young’s comfort level in the pocket, and on-the-run accuracy when waving Coker to backline spot for toe-tap TD, continues an upward affirmation of his offensive control.

‘Things can happen,’ but fans faith in Panthers rebuilding as a professional football operation again, is being handled correctly, with long-term Success on the table, and pride very possible for upgrading, is primed. Collecting on any impulse bets about Over/Under 6.5 wins would be a start on satisfying some seasonal expectations.

A consistent, semi-legendary fact, about how long it took Carolina Panthers fans to believe in last Super Bowl team – ’twas Game Ten, that Thanksgiving blowout of Dallas, Panthers still unbeaten – is kind of the local standard. Expectations in 2025 are better aligned with level of enthused Believin’ like those Little Leaguers did. Congrats! again to them, loved the ride.

Camp day with Browns becomes Preseason Fri.! Defense is Teed Up, Expect to see Run, Passing – Sure…

Head Coach Dave Canales announcing starters would get some reps in pre-season was a change from 2024, when fear of injury to front-liners without personnel for ‘next man up’ philosophy made them seem physically over-matched, as Saints shoved them around in 45-10 rout that followed Panthers all season. Injuries, including Jonathan Brookes 2nd knee (ACL) and Josey Jewels concussion protocol, are not actual factors now. Derrick Brown and Ejiro Evero’s defensive front seven, with plenty to improve on in 2025, won’t be talking smack, just NFL production every game.

This is a much better than 6-11 team making micro-improvements. Yes, if not the farm, put some resources on over 6.5 wins, and +400 (projected 3rd!) for NFC South beckons mightily.

If the Browns don’t show out in all-brown gear tomorrow, I’ll be mildly thankful for the non-dookies visual. Should we anticipate a lot of pads cracking action? Chuba Hubbard is the Lead Dawg, have to believe offensive line stakes out some attitude for him. Position ranking, Panthers have essentially two full O-lines, so offense is seeing starters action.

Trust the system Mr. Right Tackle

Taylor Moton got a little emotional about contract situation recently, I’d say trust the system Mr. Right Tackle. Extending at max rate isn’t out of the question, playing both your team and yourself into higher-greater Success has been rewarded on regular basis with #MrTeppers$.

HC Dave Canales won’t be showcasing a full playbook of possibilities, but T-Mac and XL are more than just decorations, and, well, everyone DOES want to know about going downfield. McMillan IS a physical mismatch for anyone, and fannies-the NFL would like to see how far his stride gets him regarding ‘fast.’ He’s not doing four steps and button hook routes like the chunky kid back in the neighborhood games, and he’s tracked over-the-shoulder stuff in camp situation videos, so yes, we’ll probably see a couple long balls.

If XL gets to show off another catch-run like at FanFest (39 yards), there can be quiet optimism about whether he fully becomes a tough cover for defenses based on that physicality. I’d never peg him a failure if the whole WR room had a collective big year and Leggette missed 1,000 yards with 60 grabs (49 in 2024) through distribution. If fantasy league projects double (8) TDs from him, what should McMillan’s stats look like? Yes, there are expectations now, and amping the YAC vs. very avg. 10 per catch would make him a dangerous WR2.

Can MORE than the six (or seven, Renfrow’s in, right?) expected WRs figured as locks for final roster possibly get a chance for reps? (Yes.) Andy Dalton and Jack Plummer should get opportunities to air things out, so best practices says some footballs in the air Friday. Last year the UDFA (undrafted free agents) names were DB Demani Richardson and WR Jalen Coker. Competition for jobs, yep, pads are on. LB Bam Scott-Martin has definitely had his chance to impress in preseason improved with Panthers release of veteran OLB Josey Jewels because he’s still in concussion protocol, seven months after injury.

Things happening Elsewhere

Should I actually care what comes out of four QBs situation in Cleveland, even if its up close or on free TV? I’d say no, because I’m no fan at all of Pickett, and what would be a good outing for Gabriel or Sanders? If Sanders went 6/13, 68 yards, 1/1 TD-INT, would that satisfy anything? 150 yards, 3/1 – doubt he gets the reps to produce that – but I’d say hmmmmm for sure. Defense? Gotta see it, big and bad.

Should we poke the J-E-T-S! about Fields yet? Maybe its just a tick of mine, but every time I see ‘hope’ in sentence with his name, *twitch.*

Amazing how everyone recognized the weight on Caleb Williams in Chicago (68 sacks, LOT of weight) was tough on #1 pick, so how Bryce Young made it to current level with second half of season progress becomes more ‘Yeah, that’s how QBs used to age, Year Three (plus more talented people around them if possible) you saw Better.’

Sure, some QB Whisperer must’ve happened there, and now its not, ‘A year before end of his rookie contract, are we sure about…?’ Yes, GM Dan Morgan should be up for Exec of Year consideration, the needle has clearly been moved.

Panthers signed their 2nd round DE (Nic Scourton) and #3 Princely Umanmielen (Florida) before the Bengals got #1 pick, and Stewart was often mentioned as a defensive pick https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/45824885/shemar-stewart-bengals-hammer-home-language-reach-deal for Panthers pre-draft. Instead, Morgan picked T-Mac at #8, and #2 Scourton participated in all Panthers team activities during camp.

Big difference in rookie attitude, Bengals putting certain language in contract because, ‘We don’t want to pay for (potentially) four years in jail,’ not hearing that with ‘Our kind of guys’ in Charlotte. Just sayin’.

If anyone can turn that operation around, Pete Carroll has previously done wonders with Gino in Seattle, and there’s Brock Bowers killing it, but it’s still the AFC West, with Chiefs, Chargers, Broncos, a tough place to get well quickly.

Full WR room, Chuba and superior O-line, major upgrades to Defense – Plenty to like about 2025 Panthers

As hot as Charlotte is – I put together a late lunch and almost passed out in my apartment because I didn’t turn on the AC as soon as I entered – and pads at practice has begun, best of thoughts for the process next 40 days holds for Panthers.

Yes, the Carolina Panthers have dragged the lower rungs of NFL forever it seems (‘just seven’ misses mark), but MrTeppers$ has got to be pleased with promising changes for football operations in Year II of GM Morgan, Head Coach Dave Canales, and $$$ guy-VP Brandt Tilis.

At a time when actual physical heat in Charlotte is regularly tapping high 90s, fan enthusiasm is clearly warming up too, based on a strong second half to 2024-25 season by QB Bryce Young, terrific drafting by Morgan, and the best practices accumulation of essential talent the franchise hasn’t had available in far too long.

From the return of defensive standout Derrick Brown, the selection of WR Tetaroia McMillan (#8) at top of A+ rated draft, an actual kicker competition (!!) and good news about TE Ja’Tavian Sanders (neck injury-midseason, 33 catches/342 yds./TD), Panther fans almost certainly won’t be selling their season tickets to football fans from elsewhere on a weekly basis.

First day in pads, minor problems

Several names have already been replaced by newly signed possibilities on 90-man pre-season roster, and that’s going to be a consistent churn for most of forty days, until week before the season opener vs. Jacksonville Jaguars on Sept. 7th.

Elements like rookie DE Princely Umanmielen (Kentucky) tapping Young’s arm in practice, LB Trevin Wallace and RB Chuba Hubbard exchanging pleasantries after a sideline hit, or offensive lineman Chandler Zavala getting a knee tweaked blocking Brown, forging a squad that expects to push Tampa Bay for the NFC South title has begun in earnest.

Just FYI, kickers Matt Wright and Ryan Fitzgerald (FSU) have both gone 7/10 on the skinny goal posts thus far. Fitzgerald was a finalist for 2024 Lou Groza Award, going 13/13 on FGs, 14/14 on extra points, and 5/5 over 50 yards. (Eddie who?)

Fans won’t get to see practices with plays like T-Mac’s outstanding grab on a perfectly thrown pass to beat safety Mike Jackson’s tight coverage, Clemson product Hunter Renfrow showing his route-running ability didn’t disappear during over a year out of football with ulcerative colitis, or just how fast-elusive 6th round pick Jimmy Horn, Jr. is compared to Panther legend Steve Smith. Horn was QB Shedeur Sanders ‘other’ receiver at Colorado, opposite Heisman winner Travis Hunter, but lacking the option of attending practices this year and next due to construction, fans may have to content themselves with tracking the coming and goings of personnel on a paper roster https://www.nfl.com/teams/carolina-panthers/roster or online resources.

A dozen names you might not have heard (or continue not to): Bailey, Basham, Gifford, Dafney, Harrison-Hunte, Hudson, Incoom, Kandar, Losoya, Ray, Reid, Tarquin – will be knocking heads in the heat with returning players and whomever GM Dan Morgan and Brandt Tilis feel might improve the team’s return to professional NFL respectability.

ANTICIPATION – Absolutely!

While injuries are always a rationale for lesser performance team-wise – and Morgan will get props for his efforts both last year and putting a much better group of bodies on the field this time around – Canales has achieved his stated desire to have full WR, RB, TE rooms to work with in 2025-26. TE Sanders comes back lighter and faster after his neck injury, and is expected to become the red zone presence Panthers drafted him (Texas) for last year.

Whether any of three tight ends can evoke positives to Greg Olsen, WR Jalen Coker https://www.espn.com/nfl/player/_/id/4695883/jalen-coker can hopefully expand on a very solid first year, and highly motivated Xavier Leggett (49/497/4 TD) could be a major contributor if drops concerns are mitigated.

DC Ejiro Evero was brought back despite a year where Panthers defense gave up 31.4 ppg, over 3,000 rushing (179.8 per game), and registered only 32 sacks (Broncos blitz-happy D led NFL with 63) and nine INTs – but had a #4 ranked defense the year before. Morgan spent freely to sign free agents to solidify all three levels of that unit, and while there’s no chance that Derrick Brown could reduce those numbers by himself, bringing that rushing average down ten spots (Patriots, 131.4) or ATL level (#16, 120.6) would be an excellent goal.

The addition of free agent safety Tre’von Moehrig from Raiders and Lathon Ransom, a thumper from Ohio State, should help both run support and in coverage on back end. Having a bona fide nose guard (Bobby Brown III) vs. Shy Tuttle, and 6’6″, 328 lb. Florida Gator nose man Cam Jackson figures to change that 3K problem as well.

The linebacking crew will miss Josey Jewell in coverage, and he tied A’Shawn Robinson with top sack total of 5.5, but was released because he is still in concussion protocol seven months after the injury. FA Christian Rozeboom (135 tackles, Rams) will be truly appreciated from Day 1.

NFC South title in play? Yep!

Without getting excessively enthused about three close losses to playoff teams (Tampa Bay, Philadelphia, Kansas City), .500 is the next level of achievement for Panthers to strive for. They were hosed in Buccaneers game at home when Adam Thielen’s TD catch at back of end zone was disallowed by an official and *apparently* video replay didn’t 100% confirm it. Panthers Hubbard then lost a fumble in OT and Bucs kicked a FG for the win.

Few have forgotten Leggette’s drop of a pass that would have put them in a position to win in Philly, and his dedication to catching with his hands vs. letting ball get into his body has been discussed since, and sweaty videos of that dedication are legitimate. His opinion that defenses won’t be able to double cover both T-Mac and himself is more legitimate than puffing of pride. If Horn brings back memories of ‘Stevie Superstar89,’ who was considered just a punt returner as a rookie but became an iconic receiver here, Leggette is Mushin Muhammed size with hellacious wheels, and there’s nothing wrong with holding that picture up for consideration either.

Adam Thielen figures to get his share of looks/catches from the slot to help move the sticks, and after Chuba Hubbard was rewarded for his solid efforts https://www.espn.com/nfl/player/stats/_/id/4241416/chuba-hubbard with a four year, $33.2MM contract that allowed the Panthers offensive line to control more game time while still protecting Young, many of the pieces of a successful season are in place. Adding a 1,000 rusher (Rico Dowdle) when the Cowboys didn’t do anything possible to keep him in their backfield means plenty in bigger picture.

Panthers are days away from ACTION! Charlotte Hornets Summer League was Beyond Pretty Good

*Fans won’t be* *able to see Panthers practices* on field downtown this season or next. This is a scorching reminder for anyone who ever attended a practice in Spartanburg. This is like 9:30, and people are in the small sliver of shade, you just stood there, talked some, and sweated.

Its obviously been a looong minute since Charlotte has cared this much about both its NFL and NBA franchises. With kudos for a couple seasons of solid management all around, and showing major promise in getting to There in 2025, burying Loserville tag on two vibrant, moving forward leadership groups will make for a hotter, more satisfying rest of sports year. (Knights are 11-9, 4th in International League East)

Lots of Moving Pieces, Others will do Sweating

While Hornets fans will possibly swoon at the 22 Pt./12 Reb./6 Ast. and generous ladling of attaboy! Contracts and Expectations, Many, many names

Whenever a naysayer opines that *everything* is riding on this Panthers team blowing 6.5 wins out to insure GM Dan Morgan, HC Dave Canales, and Pres. Brandt Tilis don’t lose their jobs, I let them know that football operations are doing just fine, #MrTeppers$ hasn’t been that rip everything up by the roots owner for a while. Lots of names will pass through Panthers roster before first game (Jax) in September, Hornets have some numbers to trim as well.

Yes indeedy, there are loads of Expectations here in the Buckle of the Bible Belt, and YES! Morgan did an admirable job, showcasing an A+ rated draft of documented production defensive and offensive talent, after substantial filling of defensive gaps with qualified FA personnel. Dang! about Josey Jewell leaving in concussion protocols after seven months.

There isn’t an unsigned tag on #2 pick Nic Scourton any more, and he’s done all previous training thus far. Chuba Hubbard is the teams Alpha-Lead Dawg, if that’s necessary to state, although having another 1,000 yard guy back there shouldn’t be a struggle.

Will we determine whether Bryce can see even better down field behind this line, or will Panthers move him around to open up passing lanes? (He sees fine).

Young’s ten TDs-no turnovers in final three games still hits key chord in growth estimations. The most effective aspect of a play action pass is the reality of the quarterback actually giving the ball to runner for a healthy gain. Panthers Hubbard keeps that uppermost in a defenses concerns, adding variety with open playbook becomes a fact with QB Young and Head Coach Canales on same wave.

Fact Panthers defense surrendered a stupendous amount of rushing yards – over 3,000 – well, Derrick Brown is again the Sheriff, and there are defensive ends and nose tackles now with documented stats and history with DC Ejiro Evero’s 3-4 model. No, Shy Tuttle wasn’t the answer at the nose position, though he figures to stay on roster as a rotational player. GM Morgan isn’t passing out #MrTeppers$ to just anyone, and the $100MM contract that Jaycee Horn earned after an All Pro, injury-free year, speaks to how things should now be done in Charlotte. You probably haven’t heard many of the 90 names on camp roster who project as second half of keepers on final 53-man roster, and its going to be Panthers taxi squad (15) that will make a difference through 18 week regular season.

All the linebackers have downfield speed for coverage, how well sacks are produced will be a subject of much counting from Game One.

The Panthers have been bottom three in sacks for years, but just FYI, team record is 60, held by 1996, 2013 teams. In Peppers superman 2008 campaign with 14.5 sacks, they had 50. With the recognition that Evero’s projected safety tandem (Moehrig, Ransom) are recognized thumpers, don’t be surprised what a professional, career as well-regarded defensive coach, can come up with, maybe blitz packages, when his personnel is closer to genuine NFL grade.

I really do like the hat, here at Travers in Saratoga. GM Dan Morgan and I both have jaws, his FA signings in ’25 are looking about as good as me.

Thinking Panthers GM Dan Morgan has set DC Ejiro Evero’s defense up right already, with an honest to God nose tackle and hitting machine of a linebacker (135 tackles, 11 starts in 2024) named Rozeboom, and there’s still $$$ in the checkbook, so…

Whew! barely covers the first handful of Free Agent signees, and Morgan still plucked a jewel of a second running back from Dallas’ eye by adding Rico Dowdle https://www.espn.com/nfl/player/_/id/4038815/rico-dowdle to improve Bryce Young’s potential targets. $16MM for two years of Tommy Tremble’s future is part of fuller tight end-running back rooms that HC Canales stated was run-first in Year One. Mission accomplished by Hubbard, who was everything Panthers wanted from leadership, and well worth rewarding contract-wise.

Good blockers who catch footballs? Fannies have been waiting (for anything close to Ghost of Greg Olsen), would Canales et al dare take that TE from Penn State? $16MM for Tremble and J’Tav Sanders already here says maybe not, three’s a crowd.

Rozeboom from Rams is a bona fide stud, up through the ranks quickly – Noo-buddy! gets to question Morgan’s ability to judge prime football talent AND get it back to the cave. And then there’s Tilis.

3/13/25 GShork on Panthers GM early success shoring up Defense and keeping their own FAs.

The literally biggest, at 6’4″, 332 lbs. of the FAs is Bobby Brown III, who signed on for 3 yrs/$21MM; DL Tershawn Wharton (3 yrs. /$45MM) and Patrick Jones II (3 yrs/$20MM), plus Safety Tre’von Nehrig (3 yrs/$51MM) who is a genuine thumper in the back line. Is that working or not? JC Horn’s 4 yr./$100MM is possibly an out-sized contract extension after first healthy year of lock-down reputation. I recall Horn getting three PIs against Chiefs and it was considered excellent, but $100MM, its #MrTeppers$.

Panthers defense was particularly woeful in the line without Derrick Brown, and giving up over 3,000 yards was legitimate burn, sorry Shy. Let’s just clarify the Worst part though – It was ONE POINT more at 534 than previous record, which was in a 16 game season (Colts, 533). Leave WORST at the door (32.5), life wasn’t good at all. Putting big bodies in with Mr. Brown in Ejiro Evero’s 3-4, that is the difference maker that WILL change absolutely everything.

Yes, expectations! of becoming a much better unit front to back started with a whoosh this week.

Ensuring Bryce Young’s pocket safety (29 sacks, didn’t play 5 games) was a primary improvement of last free agency, and he scored six TDs, none of the Cam reaching the football over the goal line from HERE variety.

From thirty-four out means people are watching out for you. Trust is earned, there is a Leader, several of them in fact. Sunshine and joy in Charlotte? Salty lines love drive blocking, Chuba Hubbard and ANOTHER 1,000 yard guy who catches passes, yes, Panthers have a better batch of players coming to town, three year contract guys, not just ‘prove its.’ They did that elsewhere to everyone’s satisfaction in football brain trust here, go with it.

Morgan has talked early about excising emotion from In/Out decisions, and Shaq Thompson’s injuries finally put him over the bubble, even after buyer friendly terms last year. There was a single too-early rush about getting a certain nose defender who decided to take a bunch of Patriots money instead, and okay, as best practices Dan was in on that, and not long after, things worked out better on budget overall, thank you Bobby Brown III and Tershawn Wharton. By the time this blog-information gets read, you shouldn’t bet against more goodness happening.

The personnel is clearly better

Will Charlotte-Carolina people get crazy-hyped about Panthers resurrection of pride? No rush to judgement, but first batch of Year Two from Morgan has plenty of A-1 heft to it. Between today and first practice to see who’s who of additions to those bloodied and beaten through combat in the ring last year, there will be plenty of names forgotten as unnecessary.

Whatever I’ve said about Cam never throwing a receiver open, or putting a rainbow out there for Leggette or whomever to run underneath, its a part of the offense now. Stopping people from doing whatever they had in mind (almost certainly RUNNING the ball) is already a solid defensive proposal. Thanks Dan!

As a potential reporter on events of Season 2 of Canales, Morgan, Tilis (no #MrTeppers$), I’m okay with not having to visit training camp in the literal cauldron that Spartanburg was. The two times I journeyed to the Wofford campus, once to specifically see DJ Moore and C-MC, yow! This is what a best practices, successful rebuild should-does look like.

I was in Tampa ’81-’82 when the Selmon brothers, specifically LeRoy, who was All-Pro dominator-level defensive end in the day, Huuuugh! Green at other D-end (so fast, relentless), definite icon QB Doug Williams, and former USC star running back Anthony Davis, went all the way to NFC championship game, worst to first. My cousin Frank Ball was a drummer in Bucs band, for $5 I didn’t even use press credentials with ITS SPORTS! to get into Rowdies soccer games.

Young drilled, Chuba TD thrilled, a Christmas Wish ‘W’ for Charlotte

*This is the most legitimate time to put one of those forever memorable pictures on display. I’ll probably put a Christmas ‘display’ vs. just a tree next time.*

Assuming fellow Panthers game watchers saw the same plays, with QB Bryce Young getting whacked *twice* as he got off successful passes to Tommy Tremble and a drop in the bucket TD to David Moore, I was smiling myself when he peeled himself off the turf, and pretty much laughed about it to one of his linemen. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aZgXMwYy5fE 

When you make a mistake on throws, like Arizona Cardinal QB Kyler Murray did on an interception (after being past the line of scrimmage), you hang your head on the bench. When you’ve done enough good work that smiling a lot after a heavy lick comes naturally again, that is Bryce now, not a colossal failure some painted him when the 2021 Heisman winner joined a team with very little talent, taking 62 sacks along the way to 2-15 record.

That said, the best thing beside Chuba Hubbard going for 25/152 yards and a pair of TDs (one the OT winner) was Cardinal RB James Conner being injured in 3^rd period and not continuing his rampage, which ended after 15/117 yds/TD, plus 4 catches for 49 yds.

I said exactly that (technically, just ‘whew!’ as he stood on sidelines) when Cards scored last 10 pts. of regulation to tie things up. Conner is a beast, and it seems *everyone* they play is capable of carrying a couple Panthers tacklers for 6-12 more yards after contact.

Panthers GM Dan Morgan can fix that in off-season, right? Ahhhh, expectations!

HELL YES! on Bryce’s running (Chuba even more so)

Anyone who questioned Chuba receiving a four year, $33MM contract a couple weeks ago, who wonders why a team with their won-lot record is rewarding anyone, they couldn’t have been watching many games. Hubbard had 250 carries for 920 yds/5 TDs during last year’s disaster, and now has 1195 yards and 10 touchdowns. That’s a humble producer you want to keep happy, and it sends a signal league-wide about doing and deserving. Same with kicker Eddie Pinero, who missed a PAT in the game, but has also had a season (21/24) worth rewarding.

Panthers two early TDs were on 70-yard drives, and the ball control aspect of Hubbard’s running used up plenty of clock this year. 6’6”, 330-pound free agent guard Robert Hunt, and LG Damien Lewis proved to be $$$ well spent, as offensive line has been a strength when everyone else got injured.

The joy of watching Young take off for an untouched 34-yard jaunt early, then take off again for 23 yards and a touchdown was wonderful after seeing him steadily being beaten on for two seasons. As color commentator Mark Schlereth noted, when everyone’s back is to you in 1-1 coverage, you can pick up a lot of yardage. Panthers kept Kyler Murray in check (8 carries/63 yards) by clogging the middle so he didn’t escape upfield like Bryce.

Yes, it’s good to see plays work as needed. There was a flag next to spot where Hubbard made a block to keep a defender off Young on TD run, but penalty turned out to be on defender, so un-standard Panthers luck. Young scored early in first period in a small front corner of end zone, exactly where Moore caught his touchdown in 4^th period, barely a foot from the boundary, with a defender draped across his back.

Those plays were an elemental difference from a LOT of Panthers experiences in 2024. (ie.- Thielen’s catch in end zone denied vs. Bucs, best defensive player Derrick Brown gone after first game, Diontae J.)

Yes, it would have been great to see what Brooks could’ve contributed, now he’s a project for 2025, good thoughts sent for another tough rehabilitation program on ACL that failed.

Bucs, Atlanta on the road, end of 2024

The Buccaneers played well against the Cowboys Sunday night in a 26-24 loss, leaving Atlanta and Tampa Bay tied with 8-7 records for the NFC South leadership. Charlotte may enjoy a spoiler role in who makes the playoffs, because Panthers play Tampa Bay this week, Atlanta to end the season Jan. 5^th.

Michael Penix, Jr., the Washington Huskie QB Atlanta surprisingly selected at #8 in 2024 draft, has taken over for Kirk Cousins, and the lefty-slinger put up a solid 18/27, 202 yds/1 INT line that satisfied many, though fans had expected more from the $160 million ($100MM guaranteed) money Cousins got. Achilles surgery last year left him less capable of moving well on play action passes that were his bread and butter, but his career has been profitable and productive.

If Sam Darnold might be leaving Minnesota because he’ll want BIG $$$ (Mayfield got 3 yrs/$100MM after a season of Dave Canales ‘QB Whisperer’ in Tampa) after taking Vikings to 13-2 and tied with Detroit Lions for division lead, they’ll decide in last game of year. Cousins is not in that same space any more.

Will Panthers make it a three-game win streak to end the season? That would give them 6 for the year, beating the experts 5.5 predictions. (FYI – +600 I’ve previously mentioned is based on $100 bet, I’m only betting $20, so better beer in my microeconomy, not champagne, would be the celebration v. 20 x 600 craziness)

Let’s just say that Panthers are nowhere near the laughingstock-worst team in the NFL they were labelled most of last two seasons.

Panthers, Bears, Jets are 4-12 (Well, 4-11 Bears play Seahawks TH) What a disappointment *that* team was with Caleb Williams! Rookie QBs, who knew they aren’t all world-beaters? Maybe someone in Chicago should take a beating for shoveling Justin Fields onto the garbage heap (well, traded to Pittsburgh) because he didn’t make progress there as an NFL QB despite terrific physical skills.

Patriots, Raiders, Browns, Jags, Titans are all 3-12, Giants are 2-13, so there are nine other (of 32) teams in same or worse shape than Panthers. How’s THAT for something to put a little kick in your holiday eggnog?

Panthers find joy in Munich with Young, 153 yards from Hubbard, POV on NFL QB paychecks vs. production

Its always been true that the quarterback position gets more credit (or blame) for winning football games. I’m old enough to remember that Pittsburgh’s Steel Curtain defense crushed *everything* in its sight, notching a couple shutouts during a 9-2 stretch of 1983 when Bradshaw was injured. The unmemorable Cliff Stoudt, who generally carried a clipboard while there, picked up THREE championship rings, starting 16 games, but was a non-factor (244/479/3,217 yds, 14 TDs/28 INTs) beyond handing off to RBs Franco Harris or Rocky Bleier.

Some might recall that Trent Dilfer (career 65-65 record) was the starting quarterback for the Baltimore Ravens in Super Bowl XXXV, but was not re-signed by them, the first starting quarterback to be released after winning a Super Bowl, because everyone knew it was about Super Bowl MVP Ray Lewis and their defense. Teams don’t pay phat free agent $$ for journeyman talent, which will be apparent when the Cowboys don’t pull Ryan Tannehill off his couch after a year despite headlines stating they’ll tap ‘$118M QB’ to finish their season, and probably just suffer with backups Cooper Rush and Trey Lance.

Former Panthers QB Cam Newton seems to finally recognize his career is over, and he probably has a legit bitch about lack of team recognition as ‘one of the greats’ for them. Kuechly, Olsen, Delhomme, Walls, Peppers are in Ring of Excellence, Cam might be soon though. Yes, he was a difference maker, a terror early with his RPO success, but IMHO, he never threw a GO! ball to a streaking receiver, just fastballs that probably contributed to his shoulder problems.

Giving the Carolina Panthers Bryce Young credit for a high-profile second win in a row, their 20-17 overtime victory over the Giants in Germany, its not expected everyone will get crazy happy about Young’s 15/25/126 yds/TD line, but I’m okay with Charlotte fans thinking well about three wins being better than two last season, right?

On the edge of being a Loserville location sports-wise, we can even feel cool about the hometown Hornets (4-7) playing better than half the East. Okay, they’re 8^thof 13, only 12-0 Cleveland and 9-2 Celts are over .500. Just sayin’, the young guys are doing better than 2023.

Before flipping the script about a whooole lot of other NFL teams that are truly unhappy with their QBs results, lets point out how chagrined an entire LEAGUE has to be about Caitlin Clark taking her game to Europe https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=94eXwTx-xck, where the payoff from her talent will be exponentially higher, with the added benefit of not being thugged on constantly.

Cowboys, Jets, Bears, Browns, Giants

It’s a no-brainer to state these teams are more than just ‘disappointed’ about their status at halfway point of 2024-25 season. The ‘Boys (3-6) ponied up a $60 million per year deal for Dak Prescott just before season opener, and now he’s sidelined with a hamstring injury that’s a lot more serious than what seems like an epidemic of hammies league-wise.

Anyone caught up with that blinding sunlight through the windows on CeeDee Lamb’s non-touchdown non-catch this past week, or Coach McCarthy’s obvious unsigned and won’t be back status after several 12-5 seasons at helm, meh.

The Giants obviously overpaid for Daniel Jones, handing him a 4 yr./$160M deal after a glimmer of ‘better’ in 2022. Instead of picking up a 5^th year option for about $22M for his worthwhile production (3205 yds, 15/5 TD/INTs, plus 708 yds/5 TDs rushing) and getting into the playoff at 9-7-1, they served up that whopper contract. While NYG’s 2-8 record is now below the Panthers in standings as worst in NFL, there’s no place to really offload that kind of contract.

Don’t bother surveying the fans about Jones, many of them still don’t think Eli Manning can win a Super Bowl, and he has two rings.

The Jets Aaron Rodgers, who will be in Hall of Fame at some point, turns 41 in December, and suffered an Achilles injury about 15 seconds into last season. On a 3-7 team that seriously thought he was the single ingredient they required to dig out from under a history of negatives to become relevant/Super Bowl contenders, that ain’t gonna happen. There are all kinds of numbers on his guaranteed $$$, but if he taps out after another discouraging year of under-achievement for J-E-T-S! it’s a $66M dead cap hit.

Pass the ‘shrooms please, Aaron.

DeShaun Watson was a terrific player at Clemson, a perhaps less good person with Houston Texans, and the Carolina Panthers should be glad they didn’t overextend themselves during the bidding war (picks and cash) for him that Cleveland Browns ‘won.’ As elusive and productive as Watson was in Texas, over a year and change out of the game over legal troubles, his talents have dissipated completely.

For every previous situation the franchise might want a wish/replay on (1980 MVP Brian Sipe *doesn’t* throw that INT in -37 degree wind chill against Raiders in 1981), the Browns are still in a $92M hole with his contract. They’d probably love to get Joe Flacco back after releasing him end of last year (now 0-3 in Indy), but at 3-7, they are still one of four NFL teams to have never appeared in the Super Bowl (Jaguars, Texans, Lions).

The Bears were lauded for stealing the Carolina Panthers blind by demanding WR DJ Moore to swap draft positions when Panthers wanted their #1 pick in 2023 draft. With the treasure trove of picks from Panthers for privilege of picking Young, it was expected they’d find their own franchise QB, and 2022 Heisman winner Caleb Williams (from USC) joining the Windy City crew would mean everything, the salve to heal all previous wounds. (FYI – McMahon wasn’t that skilled, just a winner with an awesome Bears D of ‘86)

Not so much healing yet, and Bears O-line allowed Williams to be sacked NINE times against the Patriots in recent 19-3 loss, so now 4-5 Bears have ended OC Shane Waldron’s time there, after just nine games. The new guy – Thomas Brown – represents a 7^th coordinator in 10 years, the previous guy (Luke Getsy) was hired by Raiders in 2023 and fired in November last year. They’ve gone 23 consecutive possessions without hitting pay dirt, with Williams going 48/95 with zero touchdowns in last three games.

Justin Fields might not have been 100% responsible for his less than successful three seasons in Chicago under those circumstances, but Bears declined to pick up his option for Year 4 based on being ‘just’ an effective runner compared to a multi-talented QB like Lamar Jackson. The Ohio St. product had a couple good games after landing in Pittsburgh, but those who thought Russell Wilson was toast after starting season with a calf injury, Steeler HC Mike Tomlin made him QB1 as soon as Wilson was physically cleared, and Steelers have won three straight.

Patriots, Jaguars, Titans

These aren’t your Tom Brady- Bill Belichick Pats, but they might actually be okay after picking UNC (and Charlotte’s Myers Park grad), Drake Maye at #3 this spring. The Jacksonville Jaguars highly touted (generational talent!) Clemson hero Trevor Lawrence has a 20-34 four-year career record, and signed him for 5 yr/$275M extension in 2024, are 2-8. That’s pretty much all you can say, beyond the Chargers choking a huge lead to them and Jags pulling out a 31-30 Wild Card playoff win as reason for the $275MM.

The Tennessee Titans with – who cares? Ok, they have Will Levis, who’s been sacked 22 times in 148 passing attempts, but the 2023 2^nd round pick out of Kentucky (after a couple years sitting at Penn State) has had some productive days, starting with a 238 passing yards/4 TD game in a 28–23 win over the Atlanta Falcons as a rookie. (So it might really be the Titans I don’t care about).

Bottom line for Panther fans, cheer the third win and maybe Bryce’s returning confidence, perhaps even give a nod to fact #MrTeppers$ hasn’t broadcast any negative POVs along the way. By all accounts, he was a solid human being/teammate during his time on the bench, not a distraction like many of the bloated contracts and ‘I deserve better’ attitudes of others.

Being half way to the six wins necessary for payoff from betting against most experts 5.5 win prediction on Panthers season is where I’m at, and their remaining schedule includes two games against Eagles and two against the Buccaneers, so a split with Bucs and Mayfield is probably best shot at $$$. Maybe they can take the Cowboys – Rush or Lance, bring it on! – and just for giggles, ATL because its *always* about beating our division rivals from down on 1-85. That end of regular season loss (15-1) in Super Bowl season still rankles.

A last hmmm…note on QBs

Sam Darnold had three INTs and 0 TDs in last game for Vikings, and nobooody in Charlotte will forget he and Baker Mayfield performed poorly in their short time in the Buckle on the Bible Belt. HC Dave Canales got the Panthers coaching gig because he was a ‘QB Whisperer’ with Mayfield (Tampa Bay) and Geno Smith (Seattle), earning both major contract paydays. Most of the NFL is split on whether Darnold, still only 27, can continue playing well with a tough defense and stacked Vikes receiving corps to get a similar payoff as a free agent elsewhere (Mayfield got $100MM), because rookie JJ McCarthy will almost certainly be given the starters spot in Minnesota when healthy in 2025.

LaMelo starts Hornets season with 34-11-8 line as rebound to action – What equals a Worthy Return for Bryce?

Its unfair to compare Melo’s classic effort in bringing Hornets back from 18-down to the Houston Rockets to what some-many see as a career-defining return as starter game for Young. Hold those trade offers a while longer, but yeah, its nut-crunching time.

One Game Doesn’t Equal a Season

There was nothing but joy in Charlotte after LaMelo’s first game fireworks return to the court, looking like the whiplash weapon that a past-present face of the franchise should play like. By all accounts, there’s a new sheriff in town mentality with the new owners, Charles Lee’s hiring as a Celtics-trained coach, and Brandon Miller’s time has arrived as well. Go Bugs, and that new kid, Tidjane Salaun too!

There have been major overhauls in Hornets since 1987 inaugural season; I covered the HUGE ’96-’97 changes with Dave Cowens as coach and a bevy of top end players, including Anthony Mason after a 6th Man of Year production for Knicks, the Kobe Bryant for Lakers center Vlade Divac swap, 6’8″ Glen Rice swooping in from wing-and-ones at 28 ppg, that other Curry was shooting treys back then…7′ Matt Geiger on the glass, and taking Cowens no more cha-cha drives to the hole on defense philosophy to heart.

2015-16 was the Lin-sanity year during Steve Clifford’s first tour. He’s the winningest coach in the franchise’s history, leading the team to 244 wins and 574 games coached. 2016 was Hornets last playoff year, a Game 7 loss to Miami Heat.

FYI- Mason was a slightly smaller individual in real life than his picture on a downtown building. If anyone ever asks, yes, he (and Barkley) were the reason NBA changed how they slowed play to a crawl, backing defenders down with controlled dribbles and muscled in layups.

That Cowens year is still one of my best sports predictions, but even my 52-30 wasn’t as good as their actual 54-28. Hornets sold out every game for first eight years, leading the league in attendance, and Charlotte became a legitimate place on the map with a professional team.

Then, thirty seasons ago, came NFL football, two Super Bowl appearances (2004, 2016), and damn! if #MrTeppers$ didn’t gain a mess of a team since Super Bowl 50 with Cam (Feb. 2016).

Fast forward to the hoo-ha! about Carolina Panthers maneuvers to select Heisman-winner Young at a premium price (OMG! DJ Moore to Bears!), a fact Panthers re-regretted after DJM’s two TD catches in recent meeting, along with the disaster of Rhule and Reich experiments.

A supposed jewel of athletic achievement in a slight, unimposing frame, Young was put through the wringer – 62 sacks worth in 2023 – and then toasted steadily for two games in 2024 before Head Coach Dave Canales put pretty good #2 QB Andy Dalton at the controls, leaving Young in learning vs. contributor-savior role.

So now we’re Here, 2024.

There’s not a huge body of evidence – that 2-15 for Young, but yes, Smith and Mayfield for Canales – that indicates either coach or player can resurrect the franchise short term, which makes it an elementally different equation from 81 more games for Hornets and LaMelo.

YES – As Melo’s noted, a full, hopefully*healthy* season is going to be difference maker in how things are viewed in Charlotte. That mobile, 7′ center Mark Washington, productive when he’s on the floor for Hornets, starts 2024 season injured is – well, just sayin’.

At a recently turned 37, Dalton wasn’t intended to be a solution beyond a short term future. Last year he also had a 300 yd, multi-TD game in relief, and yes, three solid scoring drives (26/37 for 316 yards/3 TDs, no turnovers) vs. ATL weren’t enough when defense surrendered 38. Those receivers Dalton has done decently with, the running attack Canales said would be a staple, with Chuba Hubbard and maybe, some week soon? Jonathan Brooks – there are still buttons to be pushed.

Expectations, 11 good passes for at least one TD (like Melo?)

Last week was a 40-7 pounding by Commanders, so what are expectations against Denver, team-wise and for Bryce Young? Will we determine that Canales has indeed done some QB Whispering with Bryce during this period? What weapons will be utilized better than ‘before’? Will he still get blitzed *about*every*play*?

If its a 34-24 loss like v. Bengals, must a No Moral Victories thing be invoked, or can Young earn an extra special little silver star for hitting Ja’Tavian Sanders with a red zone TD strike? 200 yards with less than a couple dozen dump off completions?

Making Leggette gallop around in his Dollar Bill pony act again would ring a bell for many.

LaMelo Ball already has an All Star appearance, and with all possible sorrows for injuries in Charlotte, his bro Alfonzo had it seriously worse, getting on the court for first time in over 1,000 days for Chicago recently. People come back from injuries all the time, Young got a well-deserved by any metrics break (bless his heart) on the bench after two games of deer-in-the-headlights type play before Dalton took the controls.

THAT is what Charlotte Panther fans don’t want to see again.

Turnovers have fed the Broncos defensive rep so far, running on their front is a great time to renew what has been solid contributions by Chuba Hubbard and a somehow renewed O-line. Below acceptable tackling prowess has been a critical factor lacking on Panthers defense, and you can’t really scheme that away.

Wooten is coming back from injury? Does linebacker Trevin Wallace get more chances to chew on MLB position? Is the sturdy and counted on (104 starts, over 6,500 consecutive snaps on offense) Taylor Moton good this week? Panthers will definitely need a center who has it buckled up tight with Austin Corbett gone.

Is there an apples-apples line we can follow Sunday, one that makes LaMelo’s P34-A11-R8 basketball stat line and that scrawny-looking kid from Alabama’s production a legitimate discussion of efforts? A simple W, and less than an ambulance full of injured would be good be a good starting point.

When our NFL and NBA sports teams haven’t produced anything memorable in a while – okay, the local Checkers won the Calder Cup (Triple A hockey) last year, and Teppers other futbol team, Charlotte FC, opened a playoff series in Orlando Friday night – its a looong way to anything like playoffs from any Day One NBA success. If all the crossed fingers about Melo’s good health (ankle supports? sounds like a fine idea) somehow fail, people can forgive a couple years of lesser production due to injury, right?

Well, are we talking about Christian McCaffrey as injury prone again as reason he left Charlotte? Hmmm… Super-popular guy, All-American image, that rare NFL 1000-1000 rushing and receiving year, then married a former Miss Universe if you can believe it.

People expect him to be great again when (although ‘if’ has surfaced) he’s back. The game after Panthers traded him, he caught a TD, rushed for TD, and *threw* for a TD. I defend him always, still expect he’ll hoist a trophy before Panthers, but no, LaMelo and CMC aren’t linked like that.

Comparison shopping?

Comparing Sunday and a Hopefully Better Result than Before situation? Young can’t do an awful lot about Panthers defense giving up NFL worst 33.8 ppg, and with an Over/Under of only 41.5, it doesn’t seem the bookies are expecting an awful lot from Panthers and Young. It wouldn’t be worst thing to run it a whole lot of times, show that commitment Canales talked about, THEN pass a couple, and MAKE SURE THEY GET TDs.

Panther receivers were upgraded, Chuba Hubbard is still gaining credible yardage, and those resources worked for Dalton, so use Leggett and Diontae Johnson like producers they should be.

This is truly a time for Young to step into his big boy pants. Feed the Panthers O-line running game, and somehow make Broncos pay for loading the box and blitzing – that was a BIG negative in Bryce’s first two games, wincingly bad to watch. Broncos have a superior secondary defense (5th) and #3 in scoring defense (15.1ppg), receivers will HAVE TO get separation, and dammit, lets see Brooks.

LaMelo was Rookie of the Year ’21, an All Star in ’22, but frequent injuries to his 6’7″, maybe 185 body, have made questioning his max $$$ extension ($260MM) as a potential drag on club – extended bench time in civilian clothes does bring up that knock.

People knocked the $21.9M signing bonus McCaffrey got, and the $92M debacle with Watson in Cleveland now going down is, just maybe, karmic. At least so far, Charlotte fans are more concerned about Panthers having given away too much for too little results for Bryce, and who really cares about Mr. Watson?

Bryce QB v.2.0 will be out there today, but the +10.5 pts. Panthers offer is a proposition bet that’s nowhere near tempting enough for me.
