Sorry, I don’t do many selfies, but if *nobody* got my strutting to entertainer John Eisenhart’s version of ‘Bad to the Bone’ at 50th Reunion, where has our national penchant for wanting to capture *everything* to somehow overlook me & The Hat? Pete Z., you’re a standard-bearer for Forever Young Boomers. John N. great to hear your running-career story re: teaching/sports marketing. Mini! and Linda N., Danny Smith’s date Janie and a visit to FL..? Jean Tafler+, carry on Good Woman and Actress.

Yes, a good time was had by those present. Can’t argue with that. Yeah, Linda and John Zampella are still looking that like fine wine aging deal.

Lacking great hat from Reunion, I’ll sub-in Queens Cup Steeplechases post-races ‘Hotwalkers Ball.’ Blue-blue Bugachi shirt with yellow, multi-color Garcia tie. lol The folding, heavy wicker antique chair was a great prop, except at dancin’ time.

Friday evening was a successful warming up about possibly identifying faces, at ‘Horses (rear end logo)’ on McClellan. I gave Belle Waddington an early AttagalPerson! for the communications and getting a group together. I styled a suitably colorful Tommy Bahama shirt with Hugo Boss blue jacket, Nantucket Red faded pants with sneakers, varsity L with racket, vintage Steffi Graf G200 (small head!) racket slung over shoulder, and yes, The Fab 50th Hat.

On Saturday, Janelle R., another primary org asset for Class of ’75 reunion, (I’m smiling) caught me just *after* they took group picture of Central Park people who went to Linton – but that’s inadequate to explain the lack of coverage for Saturday night reunion gear. Yeah, yeah, sounds like a diva, but maybe its just Colbert. Given that EVERYBODY has a camera now, if somebody captured my dancing, send it along please!

Okay, everybody liked the fedora with bead of ’50’ medallions, and light key-lime green, soft Panama jacket with splashy blue-blue Bugatchi shirt and outstanding yellow-multi-color Garcia tie as Ukraine sympathy symbol plus ‘dancing shoes.’ Nothin’?

Brother David came in a tux- but I did that for 40th. Mini! & Melissa Schein- ?, thanks for dancing near me. YAY! to Tony Malitzia for a welcome report about Bob Massaroni’s heart and him doing well two years after transplant.

LOL Alex Chrys, though not in attendance, donating a second hour of open bar was welcomed by the 90-odd 1975 grads and significant others. Food was finger stuff, all of it tasty-desirable and no mess. Chuck Mohlman says he never chewed glass off a cracked glass at one of those early college year returns to Schenectady, so memories become maybe rumors others buy into. Could have been Comely… Brother David indeed told the story of a Sunday morning tackle game with college-HS buddies, messing up a 3″ wet snow Linton field before ’75 Election Day game vs. MP. Ooops.

The only thing un-great about whole reunion event was the speeding ticket at end of I-88 going home, but ticket wrecking my super-Attitude for the trip? Uhhh, I got ahold of a guy and its working out) I’ve loved checking the mileage and point-to-point-and back, and LeShork wasn’t only one running hot the whole way. Zoom-zoom,12.5 hrs., appreciated thinking time and rock & roll tunes back to Charlotte.

Politics didn’t really come up with anyone I talked to, Dave Ryan’s slant on local control and open to all ideas for better governance in Denver vs. Dem & Rep rules and attitudes, more power bro. Almost exactly zero Charlie Kirk, and (Army Major) nephew gave me straight-up, kitchen-level to locked in believer in him as representative of military, every reason to believe nothing exotic was going to come from star-level officers being assembled from around the world. (On Fri., agree True dat.)

No posing a threat, military would never be stupid about bending any (bleeping) knees. Other than FUBAR, stoic silence worked good by me. Just sayin,’ can bad guys track ‘US Importants’ easier after Hegseth’s 1500% (that’s good, right?) failed rah-rah?

Tennis worked out Great!

No golf or racetrack this time, but got out twice for tennis with my brother David, discovered whatever discomfort I sometimes get in right wrist (yes, I’m officially old, but a fact, not complaint) doesn’t cause actual pain except with mishits when I don’t set up right. What *seems* like a rejuvenated right shoulder meant a LOT better serving than hesitant previous time.

Having played long enough, you can assess what doing wrong/right, and I’m giving a month-plus worth of Tibetan monk circulatory assist exercises on YouTube credit for shoulder strength. There was no throwback clanking in shoulder from major 2020 bike accident. I actually placed serves with pace, gave Dave some trouble. At sixty-eight, out of the tennis closet and ready for Fall leagues in Charlotte!

I’ve previously mentioned how the Central Park courts where I played growing up, and where a big time former event OTB Open was held before the US Open, were end of street and through woods- whole operation is currently dug up. I’m smiling about early days on local backboard, high fencing and balls still making it into often muddy area behind.

It turns out, running has helped bone regeneration in Dave’s left leg, and since last year, he’s played regularly with a buddy. This was first time in years I’ve done more than pound a wall, hitting with ‘live ammo’/spin/location, I’m gratified about the results. Bicycling has kept me within five pounds of best rugby weight (188) for 35 years, tennis is an important social addition. I’ll gladly play doubles there than plock! plock! I can hear from a block away at Myers Park CC pickleball courts. How quickly I’m regaining muscle memory on groundstrokes with pace, yay!

Marking the Difference, 50 years and Always, Family & Relationships

Been there, done that, got the cards to prove it.

I’ve barely written anything solid for most of two weeks, just taking in the social uptick vibe (Come on, Janie!) I count getting invited to Panthers terrific home victory vs. ATL before making 800 mi. trip up on Mon. 22nd in my positives, feel no great sadness NOT seeing more than flashes of New England game while chowing wings (12 meaty ones for $15!) at bar from Reunion on Sunday. Saw that bang! bang! scoring in second and didn’t worry about it further. Laura was the bomb on service, FULL pours on wines and brews at Horse’s +logo was noticed.

That second quickie set of tennis before my heading back Tuesday 30th, and lunch + extra time with Aunt Carol, whom I hadn’t visited in years, cousin Joe staying for a beer Friday, and our scholarly professor-dude nephew (and ex-rugger) Spencer making *excellent* exotic natural mushrooms! pizza was better than prowling Saratoga. I drove by the old house on Lakewood, otherwise soaked in the family/familiarity of life in David and Donna’s house I helped build, before moving to Charlotte in 1995.

Two small kids in cellar was a rare treat, just walking (and crying after long travel upset sleep schedules) was first time seeing as great-uncle. I had small gifts for them, a super-colorful umpire’s coin for heads-tails, and a 100 year old book of childrens tales for future read-alongs. Its obviously way ahead of four-year old AJ now, just following at this point is a start. Stephanie said they’ll find a place to bring along a Santa Claus with sack full of teddy bears-ceramic statue I painted decades ago as family gift. Legacy? Wellll, sure hope so. We all know about favorites, Curtiss has been mine, the only one I really put to sleep at night. My mantra for him: Give up the ball early on the 2-1 break, you should get it back. Hit it to their backhand until they prove they can hit it back. His video games and watching an array of dials was probably more applicable Army training.

Doing some smaller stuff with good intentions, it still counts. I’ve choked up a little at times when I describe walking two blocks to a bookmobile, parked in the bank parking lot *every other Friday* during early reading years. Yes! I read ‘20,000 Leagues Under the Sea,’ and ‘Robinson Caruso’ too. Profile in Courage and Mark Twain! A ton on Monument books, they let me get as many as I wanted. When 7-9 of us guys at St. Helen’s vied for reading volume, Hardy Boys as often as Franklin W. Dixon cranked them out, and individual quiz A’s (20/20 or they had a better A) yeah, we felt like a pretty smart bunch. High school wasn’t like that.

I admit feeling realistically elite more completely as a three year-Journalism Person than HS Jock I faux-projected with tennis racket and varsity letter Friday. Honest George, you reminding me about McKiernan and Journalist of Year award, which my brother Mike received the year before, does bring back a Whaaaat? memory. Guess I was happy enough with unexpected Sportmanship award for Swim Club.

Still think there should have been more group input on the vein of cursive writing through yearbook by Liz. Just sayin.’ Nobody asked about her and a tennis finale-the Sports Banquet, so I only told that story once.

Class Scribe, Maybe

JOURNALISM and producing a documented, award-winning product every two weeks, that’s truly meant something all these years, and 1st Amendment free speech is HUGE by me. It was lots more than yellow hall pass elitism back then, more like Ray Patterson and WE created some Journalism history at Linton. Isn’t there a John Carter wing of Schenectady HS? I was an enthused and legitimate part of the huge post-Watergate Journalism major group (double major with Business/Marketing) and still consider myself a writing resource in several areas (sports wagering), but yeah, three days of paste up with Bundo was a standard. Good memories for Brian Pollock as a J-man.

Oh for the glory of the grade! but all too soon the glory fades. He who works, gets the credit, he who doesn’t, also gets it. So if and when you get an A, chalk it up to Ray’s Fair Play. -Having a decent RCP signature wasn’t necessary, neither was a date for pass. Our reading list included a lot of Vonnegut. You know ‘Player Piano’ was about GE, right? Yeah, sometimes we took tests, Writing and certain faded jeans was enough for A’s. GShork, Editor- I ramrodded two issues in 10 days vs. 2 weeks as Editor. Bless me for majorettes piece Karen- just sayin’…Karowe, Alper, Syracuse Convention, Hungry Charlies, borrowed pencil from Nazareth girl. Big poker winner, wicked hangover.

There’s no telling how much longer I create as a Writer (nail lid on…), perhaps next book is just a particularly Inspirational Woman for a legend-in-his-own-mind Romance Writer away. I can imagine that working…

Keyboarding is MUCH better than typing, but thanks to Mrs. Eidens and ability to effectively transfer ideas and facts into production/sometimes a living as an admin. Pasting in a specific paragraph and tapping ‘Print Pages X range’ vs. retyping all 9 affected is a God-send for editing.

I mentioned those parochial school years- my folks paid PUBLIC SCHOOL TAXES *AND* extra tab at St. Helens- and top guys like Rooney, Trumble, Ryan, myself, we didn’t care how or what the girls were doing, we judged ourselves absolutely at peer level. While invoking a particular favorite teacher- who also trained all of us as altar boys- and often allowed for second ‘right’ answers if argument was compelling evidence you’d been paying attention, fellow Linton grad AnnMarie DeJohn Kinzel stated flatly Saturday, “No, we girls didn’t do any negotiating extra right answers with him.”

Ahhh yes, different times. The geek captured on my first Linton ID (1972-73), but with Mr. Dieck’s big black signature covering most of me, is an ancient mystery to me . I think there were seven guys I played Pop Warner football with in Saturday group. Bob Houlihan, about PR writing and that Hartford project…? Did I hear that Steve Lussier is some kind of great surgeon, or was I mixing that with Scott Grayman not making it *because* of surgery? Thanks for the drink Mike Osborne. Nate Manley still looks like yearbook photo, which was Christ-like with bandana. Cagnina tried to grab my hat during some pictures, sorry, not happening. Danny- oooo! A *serious* date.

Just for rounding out some Catholic school stuff, 1) I was definitely better prepared/ahead when I changed to public school in 8th grade. Instead of excelling because I knew the material, I sloughed off. We can’t afford to let public school education be buried by a lack of resources. 2) Not too awful long after I left, maybe still in high school, one of the nuns from 6th grade and a priest left together for a different life. Just sayin.’ Oh, never stole hosts, drank wine, or got molested.

My brother Mike and I were also first altar boys ‘when things started changing’ in Sixties, to NOT wear cassocks and surpluses for Mass. Priest came in, said, “Don’t worry about those, you guys look fine,” and out we went. I still wasn’t aware of Vietnam except totals of casualties that was on Nightly News. It was essentially Kent State where myth, “We don’t shoot protesters in America” FACT was destroyed, at least when white protesters got an uncomfortable blast of Reality.

Knowing about that, with armored-up and mask-wearing, heavy ordinance-carrying, National Guard troops in our streets despite a specific Constitutional law against that, means negatives can happen. Stay frosty and strong America, and may the 3.5% Rule start kicking in soon. (fyi- Its about people in the streets)

If there’s a sense of What’s Next after a 50th Reunion, thats probably natural. Having fully participated in the national crisis that was Vietnam for so many, it passed over us as the North overran the South- when they understood US Air Force wouldn’t bomb the shit out of them- Spring of ’75 senior year. There was HUGE violence besides war, which We, the #BoomerwithAttitude I still cop to, still believe we’d FIXED with civil rights all around and ecologically DOING BETTER back then to survive. This constant rending/debasing of all that for politics sake just doesn’t square.

Is that the hill you want to die on? First Amendment- Actually, Yes

If the bottom line is still, ‘Is that the hill you want to die on?’ we’ve seen some awful times along the way. Part of the Boomer ‘tude is “Our music was better,” and no matter what its called, its what they play *loud* in every arena in every non-game situation, along with participation stuff. Sometimes I’d prefer to just talk about game situation or whatever with person next to me.

Maybe next year I’ll officially register as a cranky old man based on that. Right now, I’m ready for a Fall season of tennis. The serve is Quality, cagey veteran stuff, I’m back into social swing and competitive. I trust the military to keep being serious about what Now and 2026 looks like. I’ll do my part, third time as Precinct Judge (D) on Nov. 4th in Charlotte.

My mantra remains, ‘Never let it be said I didn’t do the least that could be done,’ especially for youth reading-writing programs. I believe I have a God-given talent for putting ideas into good form for various reasons, and failing to utilize that Writing strength is poking Somebody in the eye. There is still a Passion Project with a STEAM Academy and READ Charlotte, maybe you’ll hear about child artwork, Aesop’s Fables like-read along book.

In real estate years ago, the word was never talk Retirement with Boomers, the Forever Young. Hence, the rise of 55+ communities with lifestyle choices. We Boomers will always own Man on the Moon. I recently put a Graduation Card/15 pc. puzzle project on ETSY, just sayin’ Creativity isn’t age specific. My niece is finishing a last semester for an art-related Major. We all know its a mo’fo’ of a job market, oohhhh BOY! is it ever. Best wishes to all, my Good Week-plus of calm and camaraderie (gotcha Dave Ryan, and same Goodness for long walks with Hank, Dave’s border collie) for 50th was worth the effort, may you peeps help these Next Couple Gens survive.

Have to admit, I haven’t been subjected to that slack-stare thing so many mention about ‘this generation’ too often. On LinkedIn conversations and general discussions, engaging is still about active communications, and I am great 1-1 from sales and interview situations. I concur with opinions regarding those inter-personal skills vs. reliance on texting. Just sayin,’ ain’t thrilled with AI or (bleeping) Miller neither.

WE can’t 100% rely on the courts to maintain ‘order’/all craziness that continues to crop up, but that’s material for another day, along with something like disappointment by Carolina Panthers and New England. 31st year for them and myself here, they still get benefit of the doubt for the season.

Post-a significant mental respite around 50th reunion trip, now done and done, where and what should become an extension of ‘Many Quality Experiences’ for the Now of 2025? Think I’ll check out that Springsteen flick. Best Ever Luck: Got offer of $100 ticket same day for BRUCE! *local* after 25+ years. Memorable 3 hr. concert during Great Recession, paid over 2 paydays.

Congrats again to the whole Class of ’75 Reunion org group for getting things so right for two nights. I’ll have memories way beyond that single event at end of I-88 (still making it back in a VERY solid time, 12.5 hrs), and I got a guy on that. Jean Tafler, no, we didn’t really intersect long ago, but such good communicating while hanging out- thanks so much for chatting at length. Melissa Schein, enchante! Will it be possible to encourage some e-mail or regular addresses/best practices, I wanted to send couple ‘Welcome to Real World’ puzzles to worthy attendees.

Head Coach Dave Canales announcing starters would get some reps in pre-season was a change from 2024, when fear of injury to front-liners without personnel for ‘next man up’ philosophy made them seem physically over-matched, as Saints shoved them around in 45-10 rout that followed Panthers all season. Injuries, including Jonathan Brookes 2nd knee (ACL) and Josey Jewels concussion protocol, are not actual factors now. Derrick Brown and Ejiro Evero’s defensive front seven, with plenty to improve on in 2025, won’t be talking smack, just NFL production every game.

This is a much better than 6-11 team making micro-improvements. Yes, if not the farm, put some resources on over 6.5 wins, and +400 (projected 3rd!) for NFC South beckons mightily.

If the Browns don’t show out in all-brown gear tomorrow, I’ll be mildly thankful for the non-dookies visual. Should we anticipate a lot of pads cracking action? Chuba Hubbard is the Lead Dawg, have to believe offensive line stakes out some attitude for him. Position ranking, Panthers have essentially two full O-lines, so offense is seeing starters action.

Trust the system Mr. Right Tackle

Taylor Moton got a little emotional about contract situation recently, I’d say trust the system Mr. Right Tackle. Extending at max rate isn’t out of the question, playing both your team and yourself into higher-greater Success has been rewarded on regular basis with #MrTeppers$.

HC Dave Canales won’t be showcasing a full playbook of possibilities, but T-Mac and XL are more than just decorations, and, well, everyone DOES want to know about going downfield. McMillan IS a physical mismatch for anyone, and fannies-the NFL would like to see how far his stride gets him regarding ‘fast.’ He’s not doing four steps and button hook routes like the chunky kid back in the neighborhood games, and he’s tracked over-the-shoulder stuff in camp situation videos, so yes, we’ll probably see a couple long balls.

If XL gets to show off another catch-run like at FanFest (39 yards), there can be quiet optimism about whether he fully becomes a tough cover for defenses based on that physicality. I’d never peg him a failure if the whole WR room had a collective big year and Leggette missed 1,000 yards with 60 grabs (49 in 2024) through distribution. If fantasy league projects double (8) TDs from him, what should McMillan’s stats look like? Yes, there are expectations now, and amping the YAC vs. very avg. 10 per catch would make him a dangerous WR2.

Can MORE than the six (or seven, Renfrow’s in, right?) expected WRs figured as locks for final roster possibly get a chance for reps? (Yes.) Andy Dalton and Jack Plummer should get opportunities to air things out, so best practices says some footballs in the air Friday. Last year the UDFA (undrafted free agents) names were DB Demani Richardson and WR Jalen Coker. Competition for jobs, yep, pads are on. LB Bam Scott-Martin has definitely had his chance to impress in preseason improved with Panthers release of veteran OLB Josey Jewels because he’s still in concussion protocol, seven months after injury.

Things happening Elsewhere

Should I actually care what comes out of four QBs situation in Cleveland, even if its up close or on free TV? I’d say no, because I’m no fan at all of Pickett, and what would be a good outing for Gabriel or Sanders? If Sanders went 6/13, 68 yards, 1/1 TD-INT, would that satisfy anything? 150 yards, 3/1 – doubt he gets the reps to produce that – but I’d say hmmmmm for sure. Defense? Gotta see it, big and bad.

Should we poke the J-E-T-S! about Fields yet? Maybe its just a tick of mine, but every time I see ‘hope’ in sentence with his name, *twitch.*

Amazing how everyone recognized the weight on Caleb Williams in Chicago (68 sacks, LOT of weight) was tough on #1 pick, so how Bryce Young made it to current level with second half of season progress becomes more ‘Yeah, that’s how QBs used to age, Year Three (plus more talented people around them if possible) you saw Better.’

Sure, some QB Whisperer must’ve happened there, and now its not, ‘A year before end of his rookie contract, are we sure about…?’ Yes, GM Dan Morgan should be up for Exec of Year consideration, the needle has clearly been moved.

Panthers signed their 2nd round DE (Nic Scourton) and #3 Princely Umanmielen (Florida) before the Bengals got #1 pick, and Stewart was often mentioned as a defensive pick https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/45824885/shemar-stewart-bengals-hammer-home-language-reach-deal for Panthers pre-draft. Instead, Morgan picked T-Mac at #8, and #2 Scourton participated in all Panthers team activities during camp.

Big difference in rookie attitude, Bengals putting certain language in contract because, ‘We don’t want to pay for (potentially) four years in jail,’ not hearing that with ‘Our kind of guys’ in Charlotte. Just sayin’.

If anyone can turn that operation around, Pete Carroll has previously done wonders with Gino in Seattle, and there’s Brock Bowers killing it, but it’s still the AFC West, with Chiefs, Chargers, Broncos, a tough place to get well quickly.

As hot as Charlotte is – I put together a late lunch and almost passed out in my apartment because I didn’t turn on the AC as soon as I entered – and pads at practice has begun, best of thoughts for the process next 40 days holds for Panthers.

Yes, the Carolina Panthers have dragged the lower rungs of NFL forever it seems (‘just seven’ misses mark), but MrTeppers$ has got to be pleased with promising changes for football operations in Year II of GM Morgan, Head Coach Dave Canales, and $$$ guy-VP Brandt Tilis.

At a time when actual physical heat in Charlotte is regularly tapping high 90s, fan enthusiasm is clearly warming up too, based on a strong second half to 2024-25 season by QB Bryce Young, terrific drafting by Morgan, and the best practices accumulation of essential talent the franchise hasn’t had available in far too long.

From the return of defensive standout Derrick Brown, the selection of WR Tetaroia McMillan (#8) at top of A+ rated draft, an actual kicker competition (!!) and good news about TE Ja’Tavian Sanders (neck injury-midseason, 33 catches/342 yds./TD), Panther fans almost certainly won’t be selling their season tickets to football fans from elsewhere on a weekly basis.

First day in pads, minor problems

Several names have already been replaced by newly signed possibilities on 90-man pre-season roster, and that’s going to be a consistent churn for most of forty days, until week before the season opener vs. Jacksonville Jaguars on Sept. 7th.

Elements like rookie DE Princely Umanmielen (Kentucky) tapping Young’s arm in practice, LB Trevin Wallace and RB Chuba Hubbard exchanging pleasantries after a sideline hit, or offensive lineman Chandler Zavala getting a knee tweaked blocking Brown, forging a squad that expects to push Tampa Bay for the NFC South title has begun in earnest.

Just FYI, kickers Matt Wright and Ryan Fitzgerald (FSU) have both gone 7/10 on the skinny goal posts thus far. Fitzgerald was a finalist for 2024 Lou Groza Award, going 13/13 on FGs, 14/14 on extra points, and 5/5 over 50 yards. (Eddie who?)

Fans won’t get to see practices with plays like T-Mac’s outstanding grab on a perfectly thrown pass to beat safety Mike Jackson’s tight coverage, Clemson product Hunter Renfrow showing his route-running ability didn’t disappear during over a year out of football with ulcerative colitis, or just how fast-elusive 6th round pick Jimmy Horn, Jr. is compared to Panther legend Steve Smith. ANTICIPATION – Absolutely!

While injuries are always a rationale for lesser performance team-wise – and Morgan will get props for his efforts both last year and putting a much better group of bodies on the field this time around – Canales has achieved his stated desire to have full WR, RB, TE rooms to work with in 2025-26. TE Sanders comes back lighter and faster after his neck injury, and is expected to become the red zone presence Panthers drafted him (Texas) for last year.

Whether any of three tight ends can evoke positives to Greg Olsen, WR Jalen Coker https://www.espn.com/nfl/player/_/id/4695883/jalen-coker can hopefully expand on a very solid first year, and highly motivated Xavier Leggett (49/497/4 TD) could be a major contributor if drops concerns are mitigated.

DC Ejiro Evero was brought back despite a year where Panthers defense gave up 31.4 ppg, over 3,000 rushing (179.8 per game), and registered only 32 sacks (Broncos blitz-happy D led NFL with 63) and nine INTs – but had a #4 ranked defense the year before. Morgan spent freely to sign free agents to solidify all three levels of that unit, and while there’s no chance that Derrick Brown could reduce those numbers by himself, bringing that rushing average down ten spots (Patriots, 131.4) or ATL level (#16, 120.6) would be an excellent goal.

The addition of free agent safety Tre’von Moehrig from Raiders and Lathon Ransom, a thumper from Ohio State, should help both run support and in coverage on back end. Having a bona fide nose guard (Bobby Brown III) vs. Shy Tuttle, and 6’6″, 328 lb. Florida Gator nose man Cam Jackson figures to change that 3K problem as well.

The linebacking crew will miss Josey Jewell in coverage, and he tied A’Shawn Robinson with top sack total of 5.5, but was released because he is still in concussion protocol seven months after the injury. FA Christian Rozeboom (135 tackles, Rams) will be truly appreciated from Day 1.

NFC South title in play? Yep!

Without getting excessively enthused about three close losses to playoff teams (Tampa Bay, Philadelphia, Kansas City), .500 is the next level of achievement for Panthers to strive for. They were hosed in Buccaneers game at home when Adam Thielen’s TD catch at back of end zone was disallowed by an official and *apparently* video replay didn’t 100% confirm it. Panthers Hubbard then lost a fumble in OT and Bucs kicked a FG for the win.

Few have forgotten Leggette’s drop of a pass that would have put them in a position to win in Philly, and his dedication to catching with his hands vs. letting ball get into his body has been discussed since, and sweaty videos of that dedication are legitimate. His opinion that defenses won’t be able to double cover both T-Mac and himself is more legitimate than puffing of pride. If Horn brings back memories of ‘Stevie Superstar89,’ who was considered just a punt returner as a rookie but became an iconic receiver here, Leggette is Mushin Muhammed size with hellacious wheels, and there’s nothing wrong with holding that picture up for consideration either.

Fans won’t be able to see Panthers practices on field downtown this season or next. This is a scorching reminder for anyone who ever attended a practice in Spartanburg. This is like 9:30, and people are in the small sliver of shade, you just stood there, talked some, and sweated.

Its obviously been a looong minute since Charlotte has cared this much about both its NFL and NBA franchises. With kudos for a couple seasons of solid management all around, and showing major promise in getting to There in 2025, burying Loserville tag on two vibrant, moving forward leadership groups will make for a hotter, more satisfying rest of sports year. Whenever a naysayer opines that *everything* is riding on this Panthers team blowing 6.5 wins out to insure GM Dan Morgan, HC Dave Canales, and Pres. Brandt Tilis don’t lose their jobs, I let them know that football operations are doing just fine, #MrTeppers$ hasn’t been that rip everything up by the roots owner for a while. Lots of names will pass through Panthers roster before first game (Jax) in September, Hornets have some numbers to trim as well.

Yes indeedy, there are loads of Expectations here in the Buckle of the Bible Belt, and YES! Morgan did an admirable job, showcasing an A+ rated draft of documented production defensive and offensive talent, after substantial filling of defensive gaps with qualified FA personnel. There isn’t an unsigned tag on #2 pick Nic Scourton any more, and he’s done all previous training thus far. All the linebackers have downfield speed for coverage, how well sacks are produced will be a subject of much counting from Game One.

The Panthers have been bottom three in sacks for years, but just FYI, team record is 60, held by 1996, 2013 teams. In Peppers superman 2008 campaign with 14.5 sacks, they had 50. With the recognition that Evero’s projected safety tandem (Moehrig, Ransom) are recognized thumpers, don’t be surprised what a professional, career as well-regarded defensive coach, can come up with, maybe blitz packages, when his personnel is closer to genuine NFL grade.

In the bigger Carolina Panthers picture, the off-season improvement of Ejiro Evero’s defense got the lion’s share of emphasis with free agent signings, then Tet-Mc’s semi-surprising pick at #8, and the anticipation of the WR1 the NFL world knew they sorely needed probably AFTER they got another defensive asset, but Sports Illustrated and I are on same wave about XL’s higher productivity potential.

Could elevating his stats from 49/496 yds/4TD to 70/750/7 TDs ever be considered a negative? Professional (and otherwise) opinions regarding 2025 version of Carolina Panthers cover the spectrum, with NFC South division rival Tampa Bay as a primary threat to a breakout year for Bryce Young, how complete a defensive resurgence for DC Ejiro Evero’s unit an elementary part of the equation. ‘Chilling’ will be tough on fans, nothing to watch about Panthers training camps for two years, no new indoor facility yet.

All the rooms Head Coach Dave Canales indicated he likes well populated – WR, RB, TE – are loaded on body count, and for a Quarterback Whisperer to have a full playbook to work with target-wise, the operational word is still a ground attack with Chuba Hubbard, Rico Dowdle, and plus Corbett and Christiansen, a respected again offensive line. BUT…if size matters, Tet-Mc and XL are *big* receivers.

Names & Nothing More

Three weeks until a three-day mandatory mini-camp (June 10-12), and no real visibility to what newbies on Panthers roster are possibly looking like compared to ESPN clips will probably be a long yawn. GM Dan Morgan has done research and other best practices to identify at least the ninety people now officially linked to Panthers.

The names of free agents and drafting additions will be parsed regularly until at least July, although there won’t many opportunities for seeing any actual feats, even if Panthers don’t have indoor practice facility.

DJ Moore in his first Spartanburg camp, coming down with a throw, immediately motoring to sidelines and faking-running into a defensive back to finish. ‘Tough to get on the ground’ was his rep – I saw that. The legend of ‘how hot’ Spartanburg was, Tet-Mc won’t need to know.

Can newbies #1 Tet-Mc as the All American stud receiver from AZ, and #6 Jimmy Horn, Jr., who was the Other receiver at Colorado, across from Heisman winner and #2 overall NFL pick Travis Hunter, become productive NFL pros? Are two Notre Dame tight ends in Charlotte better than one?

Objecting to fantasy stories of incredible trades the Panthers might attempt in a fever dream makes this a silly season. *Everyone* knows how high-tightly Morgan holds draft capital, nor are Panther football operations going to throw massive contracts at anyone. None include wooing Aaron Rodgers, which is the Steelers silliest story.

Lots of people may wonder why Clowney – and before him, Jeremy Chinn – can’t find a place on an Ejiro Evero team is kind of out there. Yes, Ohio St. safety Nathan Ransom (4th) is above average in coverage, but also the stud thumper they’ve lacked at back of defense. He and Moehrig should help change the ole! defense (180 ypg rushing) in run support as well.

S Demani Richardson made the roster in 2024 as an UDFA, had 26 solo tackles and an interception, and the Panthers secondary doesn’t need to consider divesting itself of any budding talent.

The names that will come up and pass away before mid-June camp and July reality are a shedding process, and off-season workouts in late May shouldn’t affect the ninety in short term. For what its worth, the run of injuries that sidelined multiple defensive assets as players, they may have an experience and recognition factor, mas o menos, with coaches if not fans. Goodbye to Shaq Thompson was adhering to past production as GM Morgan’s stay-go criteria.

They make a fuss about players like QB Brock Purdy (Mr. Irrelevant last in draft to 5 yr/$265MM) or Jalen Coker (WR, Carolina Panthers) beating THE ODDS because, factually speaking, the failures of X number of previous people to level up means doing More, now, with THIS opportunity, or become the statistic. You and I might get an attaboy! for Attitude.

An example of Panthers mishandling a Heisman Trophy QB wouldn’t be Cam Newton, whose size and speed in the RPO offense were the epitome of QB position with Russ Wilson, RGIII, Kapernick et al bumfuzzling defensive ends and blowing away secondaries. Chris Weinke would be Charlotte’s poster child for that. He holds the record for oldest player drafted at 28 years, 284 days, coming out of Florida State with the Heisman after years of minor league baseball.

On a 2001 team lacking very much firepower, he surpassed enough escalators to trigger rookie contract increases, then was shelved for two years behind Rodney Peete, who had no gas left in his tank. Weinke wasn’t given a second contract because $5M for an almost thirty-three year old backup hadn’t been invented back then.

There’s nothing like that in 2025 Carolina Panthers operations. Yes, they have their quarterback.

6.5 and Beyond

This is a minimalist POV by some measure, of Panthers making smallest level of on-field progress despite recent accumulations of markedly stronger talent as than last year. No defense then, LOTS of documented production defenders were signed. Roster turnover? Deserved and necessary, count on it.

While everyone in NFL felt Panthers had toooo many holes after 2023, their being tied for not first (5-12 with ATL and NO) record in NFC South suffered greatly from a brutal ‘no video’ decision of a Thielen TD-catch *I saw* from upper bowl other end of stadium. Being stiffed by lack of a replay became an overtime loss to Tampa Bay, when Chuba Hubbard’s fumble – practically the only negative in a superman effort season – turned the ball over when offense was driving.

If Xavier Leggette has thicker skin than most, terrific! because judging his first year a bust and now ‘just’ a sidekick to Tet-Mc is brutally stupid. Canales as QB Whisperer is more relevant to Leggette’s Year Two, surprises can become facts, coaching-reps count. GShork 5/20/25

Jonathan Brooks won’t be part of the critical mass of talent teams must gain to achieve more wins than losses, at least no contributions on the horizon. I’ve got a DeAngelo Williams jersey from when he and John Stewart tag team were very effective ball control factors for Panthers, so a 1000 yd. guy like Dowdle that Cowboys didn’t protect, yay! Oh, and thanks again to dah Boyz for 6’6″, 328 lb. roadblock Cam Jackson, that #4 for Mingo trade fits the nose guard need hugely.

Can Etienne possibly figure in? will make his and Blackshear’s names pop up regularly on media. Clowney not sticking for two years – I haven’t seen any ‘this is why’ opinions, only a $7.8M cap figure, hmmm. Shy Tuttle is continuing as a defensive piece, just not being forced to play inadequate nose guard is a net positive.

Jacksonville to open season away, Arizona, Week 3 home vs. ATL, New England there, Dolphins Week #5 is how early schedule lays out. This NFL season, #MrTeppers$ seventh year as owner, has been less miserable by many standards, and relying on his football operations people, Canales-Morgan-Tilis group, verdict about having nailed the personnel side better than expected in Panthers GM Morgan’s time is an NFL truth.

No Jalon Walker? Let it go.

Any eyeball assessment is there’s more *documented* quality bodies on hand now – by a lot – than after 2-15, and beyond the numeric negatives of last season’s 5-12. Saying the Carolina Panthers are in the same boat as ATL and NO, with Carr retiring on Saints and Cousins presence-contract still part of ATL’s $$ predicament, means things aren’t nearly as solid elsewhere as in Charlotte.

#BoomerwithAttitude is still on tap, no great sympathy for those creating chaos with external meddling AND, even though nobody asked, willing to quantify what’s on my overall plate.

Getting in three full 10.5 mile rides on X-Charlotte Trail over 8 days is legitimate #1 on Count it! physicality. Haven’t done over thirty mile week in a year, stubby tires mountain bike is a challenge. Riding as reward factor for writing Monday ‘Resumes’ piece that included Gene Hackman and me, I’m positive about pursuing the right opportunity.

Getting a *great* haircut from Desirous was a clutch decision about feeling shaggy for an important presentation. No kidding, Looking Good and Old School tactics like ‘Being there’ are still difference makers.

Bike riding is my very quantifiable, long-term asset for physical confidence, and counting positives physically at sixty-eight is a legitimate good habit. Staying on fun and firmness brings lots of people out to share the well-maintained pavement with. Ride in 74 degrees and sunshiney NC afternoon, then Food and NCAA hoops watching was overall Saturday Reality. There’s plenty of tense going around, I’ll be for more tennis – not ignorance, choice.

A physical release in optimal weather is a deserved time-out reward, so take credit for doing something necessary, important, or Special. Including ‘Me’ in the company of Hackman and NFL QBs in Monday morning LinkedIn article was being seriously happy about a ‘specific and terrific’ cover letter I’d sent about a challenging EA administrative role.

Adding in the killer haircut and not-worn-often-enough-lately charcoal suit and sweet, coral-colored with ducks tie, presenting myself at their local HQ with additional quality examples of my written communications expertise, was a solid, Old School doubling down Tuesday. Since the HR person is now a LinkedIn connection, I’ll point out that ‘Resume’ piece shortly. Call the total effort #2,3 on good things accomplished.

#4 Mint Museum, Wednesday for Freebie Night

Over my thirty years in Charlotte (same as Panthers), you’d sometimes hear, ‘But there’s not so much cultural here (or bagels stiffness, or crispier crust..).’ My response is ‘There’s a coffee mug for that, ‘If its so important, GO BACK!’ -3/5/25 GShork story to new Charlotte person Brittny, touring the Mint Wednesday, *plenty* to appreciate on three floors.

I decided on visiting the Mint late last week, and arriving 6:20, strolled three floors and multiple galleries for 90 minutes. Perhaps not demonstrative proof of culture, but I defend those exceptional aspects like the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra (which played for Pavoratti), does four wonderful June concerts behind SouthPark Mall and Christmas events downtown; regular Broadway tours at The Blumenthal, and culture *does* includes TWO Mint Museums and a Bechtler.

That literary park with Authors signs, sounds, fountains across the street is a treat to show visitors every time. Just sayin.’

I only gave away two CDTalententerprises cards, one to Brittny ‘without an A’, a favorite kind of memory hook clarifier, me being a two N Glenn. She said she was a newbie to Charlotte, we walked and talked, plenty of other participants to share opinions with too. I came back for her when I found something unique-r, and I’d be pleased if Brittny uses the good information that’s found on my good-looking card.

Clothes make The Man? If not now, When? Compared to mid-week usual, Styling a black felt hat that keeps getting noticed, Dad’s brownish-green hounds-tooth jacket, green shirt, antique-unique tie, tuxedo pants, I thought I might even drop in someplace afterwards. Wound up 100% satisfied as imagined with a self-guided event.

There were MUCH more display galleries in this Mint Location than I imagined. I’ve been in Charlotte long enough for this to be third iteration with Mint name.

There were a significant number of younger people as a category, nice mixture overall.

As I conveyed to an LI connection afterwards, networking has always been a strength, I have plenty of confidence in talking to others. Sports writing background and sales, Q&A has always been my standard, and after two full years WFH, I’ve missed that aspect. If not Great Expectations, engaging on Art is do-able.

I’ll get around to describing a microeconomic situation at Nordstrom’s in my ‘Don’t Give Up Your Day Job’ non-fiction book, but having a bit of artsy background, and being historically gregarious, Wednesday counted as a terrific reboot, new Social Goodness as an easy to achieve priority.

#5 – Opportunity to be of Service – Good Thought, it worked out

While I declined a nomination for Club Secretary in February, somebody else stepped forward during actual elections Friday for our community Mens Club meeting, so while I rethought taking the post (4x previous) because certain long-term organizational knowledge might be a clutch difference in success, guess we’ll see. More actual good PR for solid, long-time organization continues with Fridays annual Fish Fry. As a #BoomerwithAttitude, I’ll keep that communications/leadership club in my bag, use my five wood more in the Spring Captain’s Choice.

While a personal observation of being duded up for tomorrow’s festivities is legitimate, watching the Washington Commanders Jayden Daniels and Falcons Mike Penix, Jr. trading lasers and darts on Football Night in America yesterday brought a pang of Oh my! regarding Bryce Young’s recovered relevance, and how far ‘up’ still is for Panthers.

Expectations for the Panthers were never lofty (picking Over 5.5 Wins is now a FanDuel loss), DT Derrick Brown being gone after first game hurt a lot, so getting more-better tacklers for Panthers defense should be top of GM Dan Morgan’s shopping list. Panthers were league worst against rush at 2830 yards (177 avg.), #2 Patriots allowed 2103 (131 avg.), Ravens were best run stoppers, 1305 (81.5). Just sayin’.

Sure, looking good is always worth talking about, and having seen Jayden Daniels games just twice this year, I’ll still tip the hat in congrats to a gentleman who HAS to be Offensive ROY.

Torrential rain in Charlotte caused a tree up the street to fall across Sharon Road and knocked out internet for ten hours, until after the Vikings Sam Darnold tore up Green Bay (33/43, a career best 377 yards, 3 touchdowns/1 INT) in a gut check 27-25 win over long time rivals. That earned him a joyous bathing https://www.nfl.com/news/sam-darnold-soaks-in-pretty-special-locker-room-scene-vikings-packers by his teammates, while Young’s Panthers were profoundly spanked by the Buccaneers 48-14 at Tampa Bay.

Minnesota rose to 14-2, and will play the Detroit Lions on Sunday, the winner gaining the #1 seed in playoffs and a bye in first round.

At least I got to see Daniels and Penix hook up for what should become a classic example of what a franchise (11-5) rising from the dead looks like. 2023 Heisman winner Daniels was 24/36 for 227 yds., 1 TD/ INT, adding 16 rushes for 127 yards wowed a national TV audience.

In only his second NFL start since taking the QB reins from (expected to be kicked to the curb shortly) Kirk Cousins, Penix was 19/35 for 223 yards, 1 TD/INT, which should silence ALL critics of Atlanta using its #8 pick in draft for Penix after signing Cousins to a lucrative 4 year, $180MM contract ($100MM guaranteed). Learning how far his skill set deteriorated after Achilles surgery, and Penix obviously strong left arm and accuracy, speaks to another big ‘dead money’ change in ATL, which blew $40MM on former star QB Matt Ryan.

History won’t be forgotten, Year 2 was still ‘Better’

Young didn’t play poorly, going 15/28 for 203 yards and a pair of touchdowns to the estimable Adam Thielen (5 catches, 110 yds./two TDs), while former Panther Baker Mayfield was a surgical 27/32 for 359 yds. and *5* touchdowns, with a pair of scoring throws to WR Mike Evans, who again tortured the Panthers with an 8 catch/97 yards and those touchdowns, afternoon.

It’s reasonable for Carolina fans to be thankful about most of how Bryce Young has performed since returning to QB1 status after an early season benching. To see a pair of ex-Panthers QBs raising their teams into the playoffs in dynamic fashion since leaving Charlotte, ok, one last hmmm for Scott Fitterer having actually gotten BOTH here on pretty good financial terms, and their not playing well enough to be asked to stay.

If it took six seasons of lousy football to stop #MrTeppers$ from being the meddler he was until deciding to let his football people handle all football matters in 2024, Washington turning things around 180 degrees (4-13 in 2023) in just one season has to be appreciated.

The difference in the McCaskey’s long-time ownership of the Chicago Bears – 101 year old Virginia McCaskey inherited the team in 1983 from her father, George Halas – with its legacy of lousy play, messed up administrative decisions, and constant coaching changes, the Harris Group’s purchase ($6.05 billion) and overhaul of everything – from new Head Coach Dan Quinn, to the front office, facilities, and a jaded fan base – from the massively unlikeable Daniel Snyder, and Tepper’s moving to off-stage and quiet regarding operations, should be a case study.

The only good thought possible from 2024 is, da Bears burned through all those picks, got their own Heisman winner in Caleb Williams, and have posted the same 4-12 record as Panthers, three games worse than 7-10 in 2023 (one game to go).

2025 arrives soon, Good Thoughts for portal?

Iowa State and Miami was a barnburner from start to finish, 35 points already scored with 2:23 left in the first period, 49 with 10:43 still left in the second. The Cyclones Rocco Becht (22/35, 270 yds./3 TDs) finished matters off with a QB sneak with less than a minute to go, stealing the Pop Tarts Bowl 42-41 for the school’s never-done-before 11th win of the season, despite five turnovers.

That’s not how a coach of 41 years wants to roll, the effort of recruiting and coaching day to day being overwhelmed by teenagers making money grabs, scholarship commitments tossed in the garbage because (simplistically) teenagers aren’t bound by signing ‘contracts’ as minors.

Count on hearing many of the same situations reprised come March Madness, except from Marquette. HC of mens basketball Shaka Smart will continue his best practices philosophy of building a program the old way, mixing freshman with seniors and an occasional grad student, like nobody else seems willing to any more, when winning brings so much pressure for immediate fixes.

The twelve team playoff – as the Dr. Pepper Dad explains it, “goes most of the way through January,” is a mother of a burden to true student athletes. (Standard) Eleven game season + Conference championship + up to four playoff games, equals **16** games. Restructuring college athletics, meh, a problem for next year. Just sayin’.

Beyond Green-egged pork loin and terrific wine for Thursday night football, to getting brother Mike and dogs back out to Denver Tues., and sun directly in the eyes for 9 & 11:00 double header both Saturdays, I’ve enjoyed the #AmericanFamilyExperience that recreation league baseball embodies.

Call it extra grocery $$, my POV is, at 67 I make a difference- and getting thwapped! three times Sat., like never before in 4 years, I affirm I can still take it.

This fall season has been a terrific reprieve from worrying about politics in the everywhere else. We three brothers enjoyed terrific dinner and 49ers game, and Monday, when brother, RV and dogs was supposed to leave, engine consideration requiring a lift back from Charlotte shop, having breakfast while picking up his Jeep Tues. a.m. was a great opportunity to extend-repay any number of times such a courtesy is done with family. Just a ride maybe, but a clutch ride, and he gassed me up. ‘Nuff said.

Football, and no political POVs worked well with Thursdays wine, I saved those worries till breakfast with good hash browns, crisp bacon, and plenty of java before Tues. g’byes to Mike and beagles. I’ve been working on good karma every night, thank you American Family Experience.

Getting Thwapped! means a Meat hit

My usual credo is ‘If you heard it hit me, that’s not really a problem.’ Then I took a 10 year old’s foul tip straight in the chest area between top of plastic chest protector and bottom of mask. Coming to screen afterwards, one Mom smiled, ‘I know you say that, but I *heard* that one.’ And most recognized I *must* have just missed a nutter a little later.

10-19-24 Field #3 – Karma might have listened too close about historically, my not having been hit squarely- I got a tingle for sure. I still consider that ‘best practices.’ Cool when crowd works with my chatting along, I’m recognized at OP fields after plenty of games there over last month.

Most of a Dozen Shots from Being a Blue

I’ll continue to praise the LL baseball environment as American Family Experience, especially the weekends (9, 11:00) and coolish nights lately, what it means to those ballers of whatever skill, to try implementing advice you offer while they’re at bat. Solid gold encouragement for sure. Having given my card to one well-chilled Dad on Wed. night, I promised to share my POV joy a little about that experience here.

Call it extra grocery $$, Umpiring is a really difficult option to beat, great atmosphere at $60 for two hours and change. Travel teams and five games a day stress, stopped that gig two years ago. Rec league teams, first season after coach pitch, sometimes 10-12-13s. Hey, somebody turned in the cleats I left behind after Mon. night game in time for this weekend, so I’m glad about that too. Last Saturday I wore dress shoes! instead of sneakers while doing the plate. Knew it’d make a good little story.

Sometimes I use one of Dad’s old tees to dust off plate, tell people ‘I have a brush, just trying to keep Dad involved.’ They tell you as an Umpire not to talk with people behind fence, one call and you could turn bad on you, but I admit to being a yakker. If not you, I’ll talk to people over there, no problem pal.

My top thought bringer was a pretty excited young shortstop, telling me he might get to pitch the 3rd inning (which he does). Turns out coach I mentioned youngsters excitement to was Dad, who admitted, “If I told him definitely, you wouldn’t be able to catch his attention for anything else, no way.”

He showed no great talent, spraying balls to the backstop while other team turned walks into runs with constant stealing. This maybe 4,’ cap-askew kid, just got back on the mound and threw another one. What determination, getting to rubber, turn, fire! for most of five runs or all the way through lineup, whatever their league rule was. Max enthusiasm, great coaching attitude, real glad I wasn’t on the plate was important to overall Satisfaction.

Have to state I won $68 Saturday for college football picks on Fanduel. Part of my expertise when writing football should be followed up on. If 49ers had converted 2-pt. after last TD (48 total pts.), I would have done that again (Over was 47.5 as part of 4-legger, incl. Ravens game). Just sayin.’ Yay! for my microeconomy.

Genuine appreciation

You betcha, the Genuine Appreciation by parents, patrons, players, the elemental interfacing after hours of my mostly remote work production, is personally enriching. Soooo many positives, thank yous from parents watching, the kids who want to tap fists, I’m doing a little part for that American Family Experience. I traded some group snack cheese puffs for 2 pieces of gum. Telling one group ‘this catcher is really up close to batters’ two pitches before a batter knocks his glove loose for being that close, they know I’m working knowledgably. VERY little second-guessing, I’m known to be solid on strikes, including the down and away every coach wants THEIR pitcher to get.

The catcher-son of a gentleman I’ve spoken with 4-5x was in front of me Saturday, and I noted his positioning with Dad after an inning, sort of hanging off outer third, and he said hasn’t really told him where, more about close when son felt comfortable. Pitchers typically nibble outside a target was a POV I offered him, keeping catcher centered vs. past white lines results in lot of balls while yes, producing sucker swings. Its a great gentlemans meeting of minds, helping kids in a real way.

I prefer to have them positioned between me and unreliable 10 year old arms and persons with a bat, also a safety issue, y’know? Guy hooked other ump and myself up with post-game cheeseburgers my first time at Olde Providence. Just sayin’.

Thats been my CDTalent Enterprises mantra/extended purpose over 4+ years. Beyond balls and strikes, little things to coaches, often they might already know, but seeing something detrimental to ‘fix,’ I’m up for contributing that. Especially pitchers. Catchers – Don’t pose, I saw where you caught it, then where you moved it to.

Catchers cheating

I’ve been asking crowd about catchers cheating a little recently, few knew what framing truly meant – but I’m talking MOVING a pitch. Whether they’ve grabbed a mitt of dirt low or stopped a sky-high wild one, catchers will present the result as close to middle of the zone as possible. Pitchers and YOU, the crowd, often wonder, ‘Why isn’t he calling strikes?’ because glove is right there. That’s what I get the big $$ for.

After calling a higher than usual strike, and hearing ‘I don’t think so,’ from batter, I looked at the young man while brushing a ton of sand off the plate. “It will never be to your advantage to have me hear something like that,” I told him.

One kid moved his elbow a minimal amount and managed to get clipped, sent to first. I saw what happened, but declined to call the violation of not trying to avoid – and one person’s voice asked if thats what had happened – but hit batter was my decision. I went to dugout after half-inning, and told the batter I saw the play, let it go because a good kind of slick move. HAVE to appreciate the art of the subtle move, from Reggie Jackson’s hip in World Series to *every*single*catcher* trained to frame/move pitches to steal a strike call. I’ll have to tell Scott Grayman, he always advocated the pinch and ‘Look where it hit me!’ approach.

Slinging bats, obstruction

Sometimes league rules codify a first warning for bad bat action, I might give two for a team – coaches are generally very good with followup to warnings. One safety and game situation I take charge of is plays at the plate, because everyone runs on passed balls, runners from third sliding in with pitcher hopefully covering at plate, Out! or safe is a regular event.

Getting bats and batters out of the way, telling catchers ‘Move the bat away from plate’ before ball might still be in play, helps a young catcher. I enlightened some patrons about kids getting tagged out at plate, because there is often a ridge in right hand batters box, noticeably dug down in middle, but solid clay perhaps 6″ from plate that often stops slides. Fun fact to know and tell.

I ended first game Saturday on obstruction call – one more time the batter froze in box after a wild pitch, and kid from 3rd coming. Catcher dove around batter, couldn’t flip to pitcher, so had to say Obstruction, winning run scores. Everyone was thrilled at finale, thats what makes it such a cultural binder. Line it up! Congrats all around, kids they know from school.

I’ve only called two out for slinging this fall season (many leagues actually say out of game), because I let everyone know at plate meeting, its a safety issue I can control. One previous coach said I traumatized his pitcher because I yelled, “DONT THROW IT!” as he was stepping into his delivery and I didn’t have my mask on. Most pitchers are ready to go pretty quick, so its talk to the hand time. Take an extra couple seconds to instill safety aspect, isn’t a bad thing. Yes, next batter, if teammate left bat after a hit, pick it up.

I often say this tongue in cheek, ‘You don’t reward stupid,’ because when kid on 2nd keeps stretching his lead, Dad was saying more, more, the pitcher gets signal when he’s too far. Ooops! Yeah Austin, gotcha at second. Same with trying for a triple instead of just a double- Close, but out! (shouldn’t have done that).

I worked with a first time, real game Blue one game, been doing Machine Pitch. He didn’t know signal for infield fly rule (a 0 or 1 out finger at top of mask). He called a balk though. Attaboy! Overruled him/provided help on a call at first.

A Coach wasn’t going with idea his pitcher plunked the batter on wrist, kept saying, “He was swinging!” No coach, he was backing away, and from part way between 1st- 2nd, I saw *exactly* what happened. He.plunked.the.batter.

Getting hit in thigh, ball breezing between thighs a little low, taking an exclamation point! foul tip straight in the chest- an event that surprised but didn’t hurt me- and that tingler, well, still two more games this week. Another check before Election Day (and rent) is a Good Thing, and then comes Thanksgiving and group Christmas tree sales.

Doing what I can

Even if you’re the center fielder who stuck their glove out, and the good hit the batter thought he had, somehow wound up in your previously never-caught-a-thing kids mitt and all rejoiced, we have to affirm what we know is right, not just get lucky, on Election Day.

Little League, cheeseburgers, Carolina nice weather, Democracy, ballot not bullet, #BoomerwithAttitude, a little showmanship on a called third strike, between my Umpire Wisdom-wise Blue (and Precinct Judge (D) attitude), lets say I don’t think this country will take a called third strike, bat on their shoulder attitude regarding this most important event of 2024.

I need actual replacement cleats for my golf shoes, but Dodgers – Yankees in the World Series, what more could any kind of fan honestly ask for?

I was early for a field ump assignment, under the lights at Independence Field Wednesday, and saw the coaches working on it, but 10 hours plus of tropical rain Monday was still around, a tarp didn’t help home plate area enough. Decently hit grounders were seriously slowed by grass/turf. For whomever does the pants this week, that red clay on uniforms is gonna be tough.

With a yellowed full-full moon above, and the artistic coloration of a building beyond right field, we played seven, the full two hours and fifteen allowed. I congratulated Corey, the home plate Blue, around him and 1st base line looked WWII stuff, where ‘slogging’ is operative word.

I’ll get back to the ballers a little later, such a shareable youth sports event. Muddy? Pssshhh. Yes, my outlook on Wednesday, but MONDAY Panthers are #1 story. Hold the awww, Bryce is gone moans. Andy Dalton is the QB who just won Panthers first game in as BIG a way as you could believe, AND defense stoned the Raiders run game with just 54 yds. allowed. Absolute team effort.

And then came Dalton

Diontae Johnson most definitely, 8 catches/122 yds/TD, Leggette 2/42 yds, Tremble 3/29, Hubbard 5 rec/55yds/TD, plus 21/114 yds. lugging it, Thielen 3/40 yds/TD, that means all dawgs got fed. Of course, that brings up the absolute change in norms coming at benching of Bryce Young after 0-2, deer-in-headlights performances that weren’t appreciated. No excess judgement on ultimate decision maker, but Bryce, by any metrics of successful QB play, needed to sit.

Sunday was elemental, empirical – Did using a very good veteran #2 QB satisfy the idea more could be/needed to be done offensively? Yes. Next football decision and hold the Awww, Bryce...

Next action, and Reality at 37, is Dalton isn’t the forever QB, the expectation is Bryce will return to helm, but Panthers were down 30-3 by time I finished polishing my season opening blog and turned on game. Unreal. I think the way Saints mauled Cowboys for 44 in Big D the week after wasting Panthers has to be considered along the way, just sayin’. Carr is throwing it pretty well.

The Panthers defense got gouged regularly by Chargers without Derrick Brown, but somehow the Eagles are giving up worse than 6.7 per rush, so call it a spear set in place vs. Raiders for front seven Panthers.

This Monday morning, I still believe Panthers have significantly better personnel in 2024 than before Morgan, Tilis, Canales started running football ops. I’ve given #MrTeppers$ props for not talking much, but bringing back those Game 1 projections of mine seem a lot more real now, after Dalton has connected long and with Everybody on passes, and hung a genuine W on the board. 2024/09/08/it-wont-be-a-jinx-to-say-panthers-start-2024-with-a-w-in-dome/

There’s no denying its a different game with experienced vet like Dalton, and yes, everyone got healthy with his distribution. Yes, he’s only guy in NFL so far with 300+ yds., 3 TD day. 437 yards sounds like lot of contributors because it was. By the money numbers, Panthers were +5.5 (didn’t interest me), and over/under was 39.5 (-115), nobody was expecting fireworks like 36-22. HC Canales has always maintained that running football would be difference maker, and they would be doing it – Hubbard and O-line produced.

Give it up for 3 sacks and INT, only allowed 3/11 on 3rd down. That’s Evero’s hot buttons for Panthers defense, sacks and getting off on third downs.

Uhhh, no, its not JUST one win. Glad to have the Red Rifle working with live ammo. Stay strong Panthers defense. Not seeing any cred that Canales somehow abused Bryce by pushing belief in his abilities (yada yada). No, that was QB Whisperer Coach.

It says Cincinnati on schedule next, that would seem a legitimate tester. See ya’ Sunday.

The epitome of athletic team effort, well, sort of

About umping a muddy, full moon game, it was 10-11s vs. 12-13s, same org, everybody on same system. Corey was plate ump, handled the truly mucky area, people moved gingerly around the plate all night. To keep their balance, batters weren’t taking full cuts either. Still, no bitching about the conditions, that’s what was working for me. Making a few calls during ball game, fine panorama of the evening down near an active park, with some live music from back of a bar, a short block from back of theater behind home place. Runners and nearby girls soccer, a little wet, yep.

Wednesday evening as symbolic of athletic team effort, meh, but youth baseball works for me. I appreciated how the pitchers pitched, not stressing balls and strike calls, a little heavy, maybe. Hey, *everybody* runs on pass balls. Outfielders didn’t just miss fly balls, they tracked them down and usually found the cutoff man effectively. What’s to complain about? we got a game.

There were people sitting in the stone-ledge amphitheater behind home, someone always went to find balls fouled out of play. A wet field didn’t bother watchers. The coaches wiped off and rotated the balls steadily, telling their pitchers, ‘Take a good one.’ One of younger team, Wyatt, I recognized from last week. Had to chuckle when his Dad, coaching at first, just shook his head, “Ahhh, maybe some day he’ll learn how to hit a curve ball.”

My four games at Saturday assignment at Carmel MS, and three nights next week, started at 8:30 (-3:15), but its barely five miles from my house. I’ve always said-felt umpiring, being a Blue, was my contribution to the American Family Experience. $60 when you’re plate umpire is a legitimate contribution to my microeconomy too. Extra groceries, y’know.

Just maybe, sometimes, I’m a guy who can make a difference with a young pitchers (obvious) flaws. When you start umpiring, they tell you don’t be chatty with people on other side of fence, just takes one call to get them going wrong.

Answer: Sorry, I’m a yakker. Extra talking kind of got me sideways with a commissioner type Saturday, specifically a thrown bat and my calling runner out vs. just warning. All about safety issues Mr. Manager. Maybe a little #Boomerwith Attitude.

If you hear it hit, its no big deal

Sunday I’ll be back at Sedgefield, where I got foul-tip clipped this Spring. Whether arm was broken (not) was an immediate concern then, ice pack arrived just in time or it would’ve blown up. Supposed to be 13-unders today, little less velocity. The ‘hear it hit aspect,’ crowd always ohhh!s when you take a crack! in chest protector or mask, but its more not hearing it, that means it caught meat (me).

Being Blue is still a physical challenge. I always get a chuckle for saying, “I don’t get out of bed if not going to get hit at least a couple times.” The best thing a Blue can ever do is Out! call, standing over finale to a play at third when tag is high, runners foot got underneath it. Bam! Case closed.

After a stiff one to the grill in Spring, I took off mask and said, “I’m gonna think about that one an extra second,” just for little theater. I haven’t taken a nutter in all my years, fingers crossed. I consider that a ‘best practices.’

Turns out a beef from Sat. caused me to be off Sun. I’m almost glad, lost $120, but when I left after one o’clock, it was 89 degrees, turned out to be a scorcher afternoon, mid 90s, blazing Carolina blue sky. I finally washed my cruddy car instead. I wonder if that clay in Independence Park dried out. Here’s where that staying hydrated focus meant taking care of yourself – Sedgefield is a hike around to back side of school, no services for bottled water.
